PRODUCTION LINE SIMULATION
Last Revised: May 2015 1. PURPOSE This exercise involves the analysis of antacid tablets repeated at fixed time intervals. 2. REAGENTS & EQUIPMENT 2.1 Antacid tablets 2.2 0.1 M NaOH (not standardised) 2.3 0.1 M HCl (standardised) 3. PROCEDURE 3A. Preparation 3.1 Obtain two glass mortars & pestles, two 250 mL conical flasks, and beakers with 500 mL of 0.1 M NaOH and 0.1 M HCl. 3.2 Set up a burette with 0.1 M NaOH. 3B. Standardisation of NaOH 3.3 In duplicate, titrate a 25 mL aliquot of 0.1 M HCl to phenolphthalein endpoint with the NaOH (see Requirement 4.1). 3C. Analysis of antacid tablets 3.4 Every 30 minutes you will be supplied with two tablets from the “production line” for analysis. 3.5 Weigh each tablet. Record the mass of each and the average mass on the supplied control chart. 3.6 Grind each tablet separately in a mortar. 3.7 For each tablet, weigh accurately, on a 3 d.p. top‐pan balance, 0.4 g of the powder directly into a 250 mL conical flask. 3.8 Pour 50 mL (as close as possible by measuring cylinder) of 0.1 M HCl into each flask and boil vigorously for 3‐4 minutes. 3.9 Cool briefly in a icebath. 3.10 Titrate to phenolphthalein endpoint with the 0.1 M NaOH. 3.11 Calculate the amount of CaCO3 in each tablet using the formula on the Results Sheet. Record the amount of each and the average on the supplied control chart. See Requirement 4.2. 4. REQUIREMENTS 4.1 You must calculate the molarity of the NaOH before your first tablet samples are ready. 4.2 You must have completed the two control charts (mass and CaCO3) before the next analysis time – 30 minutes. REPORTING Submit the two control charts and the result sheet. CONTROL CHART Antacid Tablet Weights Date: _____________________ 1.42
