The graduate certificate
This one-year, five-course sequence of study is aimed at increasing the number of personnel qualified to provide early intervention
for Illinois children who are deaf and hard of hearing. Upon completion candidates will have earned a Deaf and Hard of Hearing
Listening and Spoken Language Professional graduate certificate from Illinois State University as well as having completed the
necessary core knowledge competency areas needed to apply for the early intervention credential in Illinois.
Minimum admission criteria
Requirements include:
• Undergraduate degree from an accredited college or university
• Current deaf education, speech and language, or audiology
certification/licensure in Illinois (or currently completing
licensure/certification)
Course schedule
Summer classes meet three days a week with online component.
July 2–August 2, 2012
• Document showing one year of successful teaching or related
service experience
• Evidence of disposition for advanced study
A maximum of 12 applicants will be accepted into the program this
year. Preference will be given to applicants who are bilingual, from
underrepresented populations, or from high-need geographic areas.

Deaf and Hard of Hearing Listening and
Spoken Language Professional

An individually designed course that requires
six Saturday seminars, professional practice
field observations, family centered home-based
practicum, and other projects as agreed upon
between student and instructor.
Tuition scholarships and stipends provided to accepted applicants.

2. Complete admission requirements for the ISU graduate program
and complete an admission portfolio to be submitted to the Special
Education Department. Materials for both requirements can be
downloaded from SpecialEducation.IllinoisState.edu/
certifications/dhhspecialist.shtml.
3. DEADLINE for receipt of all application materials:
April 13, 2012.
