Petroleum Geology, Global Warming and Energy Efficiency Campaign: Climate and
Environmental Concerns – eni Children’s Education Programme
Hazaribag, Jharkhand (India), 8th November, 2011
Background history of Energy Efficiency Campaign
This all started from the conference
on “Geology and Hydrocarbon
Potential of the NeoproterozoicCambrian Basins in India, Pakistan and
the Middle East”, which was
organized in February, 2008, by
University of Jammu and MPRG,
University College London, at Jammu,
India. This conference was sponsored
by eni India; EGI, University of Utah;
ONGC, India; Ministry of Earth
Sciences, Government of India; J&K
State Council for Science and
Technology and the Department of
Geology
and
Mining,
J&K
Government. Dr. Bindra Thusu, one of
the technical conveners of the
conference, put forth the idea of this
workshop, which was to inculcate the
interest of geological science among
the students of 10th – 12th standards. The reason for selecting the students of this age group
was to build their interest in geosciences and inspire them to choose this subject as a
carrier. Another motive was to sensitize these young brains how to cope with Global
Warming and Climate Change, because they are our future and they have to face this
menace. This idea was welcomed by other technical conveners of the conference and it was
3
decided to organize the workshop two days before the conference on 19 th February, 2008.
More than 150 students and accompanying teachers from 75 different schools of Jammu
and Kashmir participated in this workshop. The first addition of the booklet on “Petroleum
Geology, Global Warming and Energy Efficiency” was published and distributed among the
students. The first copy of the booklet was presented to Dr. Manmohan Singh, Hon’ble
Prime Minister of India, on 16th February, 2008 at his residence in New Delhi.

generated and trapped, the consequences of the Global Warming and Climate Change due
to the excessive usage of fossil fuels. The programme was well received by the students and
everyone who attended it. It was also appreciated by the State Government and requested
to repeat this activity for the children of Jammu and Kashmir State in three different
provinces separately. After achieving the success and popularity, the programme was
organized within a very short period of time in July 2008, at Leh and Kargil towns of Ladakh
province of J&K. The events were organized by University of Jammu and MPRG, University
College London and were sponsored by eni India under the umbrella of Corporate Business
Sustainability Programme (sustenibilita@eni.com).
