Filtration in the Future 3:45 p.m. – 5:15 p.m. Moderator: Rory Holmes, President, INDA Effects of Temperature, Relative Humidity, and Air Flow on Microbial Growth on Loaded Ventilation Filters Thomas H. Kuehn, P.E., Professor Mechanical Engineering Department, University of Minnesota A laboratory study has been conducted to determine the effects of temperature, relative humidity and air flow on the growth rate of Cladosporium sphaerospermum, a common fungus found in indoor and outdoor air, on loaded filters. Discover what the results are in this enlightening presentation. Filter System for Space Habitat: Concept Design and Evaluation R. Vijayakumar, Ph.D., President, Aerfil, LLC Air filtration while ubiquitous on earth, is essential for confined and closed spaces found in space habitats. The air cleaning and filtration systems required need to remove a broad size range of particles such as skin flakes, hair and clothing fibers, and other substances from food and hygiene operations. It must also remove any extraterrestrial planetary dust tracked into the habitat by the crew returning from exploration, as well as debris from operating machinery and equipment inside the habitat. This paper will discuss the development of a filtration system and its evaluation at ambient and reduced gravity environments. Meltblown Submicron Fibers for Tomorrow’s Sustainable Filter Media Gajanan Bhat, Professor and Director of UTNRL, The University of Tennessee As the interest in nanotechnology continues, meltblown submicron fibers have been attractive as filter media. Recent research and development at UTNRL has shown that meltblowing is a viable process to produce high quality filter media. Further to address the needs of the future, it has been demonstrated that sustainable filter media of submicron fibers can be produced at commercially feasible rates. Results from this ongoing investigation will be presented. AGENDA: Wednesday, November 14 Keynote 9:00 a.m. – 9:45 a.m. Moderator: Christine Murray, General Manager Liquid Filtration, Freudenberg Filtration Technologies, L.P. Trends in Automotive – Implications for Filtration Philadelphia City Hall Philadelphia, PA Dr. Andreas E. Kreuter, Speaker of the Management Board, Freudenberg Filtration Technologies Automotive is one of the largest global industrial segments and is a major customer for many different filtration applications. Dr. Kreuter will offer insights on trends in the automotive industry and its implications on filtration from the perspective of Freudenberg – an 8 billion US$ multinational business group with a large share of its portfolio serving automotive customers in filtration and beyond. How does the global automotive market develop? What technical trends can be seen? What will be the impact of e-mobility and alternative powertrain concepts? The speaker will analyze the impact of these and other trends and developments in Automotive on filtration and is available for questions from the audience afterwards. Automotive/Transportation “Another INDA event where you bring together an audience of industry decision makers who have a genuine interest in our technology. I average 6 -10 “Trade shows” per year, and none equal the quality of leads that an INDA event generates.” Jim Molinare, Market Segment Manager, Branson Ultrasonics Corp. 9:50 a.m. – 10:50 a.m. Moderator: Chris Peart, Director of Sales & Development, HDK Industries, Inc. SOS to Filter Manufacturers: Oil-free Air in the Aircraft Cabin and Flight Deck Judith Murawski, Industrial Hygienist, AFA-CWA, AFL-CIO The aviation industry has recognized the health and safety hazards associated with exposure to oil fumes that can contaminate the ventilation air on aircraft since the 1950s, but has done little to prevent exposure. Further, aviation regulations intended to address exposure to contaminated bleed air on aircraft are vague and not enforced. More recently, though, there has been a growing interest in filtration options for the bleed air supply on aircraft. The author will describe how oil fumes can contaminate the aircraft air supply system, the chemicals of concern, the basic requirements of bleed air filtration, and some of the technical and regulatory challenges. Filtering Petroleum Based Liquids Field Testing Using ASHRAE Guideline 26-2008 Andrew Shepard, Director, Global Market Management, Hollingsworth & Vose Company New vehicle emission, stack emissions, and fuel economy regulations around the world are changing media requirements. This presentation will focus on the continued need for higher efficiency, longer life, and lower energy usage when filtering petroleum-based liquids. If you are interested in complex fine fiber composites for petroleum-based liquid filtration, then this is a must see presentation. Don Thornburg, HVAC R&D Manager, Camfil Farr Many end-use customers want to know how a particular filter will perform in real life conditions but laboratory test results don’t always capture this. Filter manufacturers began conducting field testing to demonstrate true filter performance to their customers. These in situ tests became so prevalent that ASHRAE developed Guideline 26. The speaker will explore the history of this standard and explain how its use is helping customers understand the performance of their filter in an HVAC system. Diesel Transportation and Equipment Filtration – New Opportunity for Design Christine Stanfel, Ph.D., Director of Engineering, North America, Freudenberg Filtration Technologies, L.P. Filtration requirements in the diesel transportation and equipment segment have become increasingly stringent in response to regulatory agency targets for health and environmental protection. Engine and refining technology changes necessary for emission compliance have altered the nature of contaminants. Current challenges to filtration in the diesel transportation and equipment segment will be reviewed within the context of media and filter design requirements for successful separation. AGENDA: Thursday, November 15 In Situ vs. Lab Testing 9:00 a.m. – 10:40 a.m. Moderator: Emily Moore, Director-Market Development, Nutex Concepts Corporation Filtration Performance Assessment “In Situ” Robert Burkhead, President, Blue Heaven Technologies Quantifying the performance of products has long been an accepted way of making meaningful decisions about the best product to use in a given application. Indoor air quality products and, specifically, air filtration subsets of those products are a typical use of these measurement efforts. Opportunities and Pitfalls of In Situ Air Filter Testing Philip Winters, PE, Director of Product Development, Filtration Group, LLC Field (in situ) testing of air filters in HVAC systems offers some excellent opportunities to learn things that cannot be easily learned using existing laboratory test methods. However, those opportunities must be weighed against the difficulties associated with getting meaningful in situ data and then interpreting it correctly. The presenter will discuss the types of data that are best obtained in the laboratory versus those that are best obtained in the field. He will also discuss ways to improve the quality of in situ test results. In-home vs. Lab-based Performance Testing of Residential HVAC Filters Kevin Kinzer, Laboratory Manager, 3M Home Environment Markets Division The ASHRAE 52.2 test standard has been in use to characterize HVAC filters since being published in 1999. This standard was developed primarily based on commercial HVAC filters. This presentation will provide a comparison between this standardized laboratory test and characterization of filters used in actual homes. Fractional efficiency changes resulting from standardized artificial loading dust and in-home use will be presented for a variety of different types of residential HVAC filters. The differences in the level of predictability of the standardized test will be explained based on the properties of the filter media and actual in-home challenge aerosol characteristics. This presentation is targeted at explaining how some new techniques are being used to make more useful judgments and effective assessment of how air filtration products can be analyzed. Examples are given and problems are identified to help the practitioner avoid the mistakes so inherent with field-testing. Program subject to change. The opinions expressed at Filtration 2012 are those of the speakers and not necessarily that of INDA or its Board of Directors. Expect to Meet These Companies*... “We have attended Filtration several times and Filtration 2010 marked the first time in the past two years we exhibited at the event. Vijayakumar, Aerfil, LLC Chris Muroski, Bayer MaterialScience Christine Murray, Freudenberg Filtration Technologies, L.P. “Ahlstrom has been participating in INDA’s Filtration Conference and Expo for many years. For us, the INDA Filtration show is one of the key events for our Filtration Business Area. We always look forward to this business and networking opportunity with the key filtration industry players. One of the most rewarding parts is being able to have discussions with people from various functions from R&D and sales, manufacturing as well as marketing – during the same event. This makes the Expo such an important and productive event for Ahlstrom. The Filtration show is also a great place to learn about the next generation filtration technologies and the other must-know developments that continue to drive the filtration market. In 2012, we look forward to another successful Filtration show in Philadelphia!” Noora Blasi, Marketing Manager, Ahlstrom Timmy Timbs, Hotel Information Philadelphia Downtown Marriott 1201 Market Street Philadelphia, Pennsylvania 19107 Reservations: Hotel reservations must be made through INDA and all requests must be submitted in writing.
