Together, we’ve all been working hard to
make the Davis Drive bus rapidway project
become a reality. With the rapidway
scheduled to open at the end of December
2015, and construction of the Yonge Street
rapidway kicking off, it’s an exciting time for
Newmarket and York Region.
The rapidways in Newmarket support York
Region’s growth plan that anticipates the
population to increase to 1.5 million
residents by 2031, by helping to contain
growth and encourage compact, mixed-use
neighbourhoods. Mixed-use developments
blend a lifestyle concept of housing,
employment and many amenities within a
close distance to each other that are

centrally located to transit routes. These
significant improvements in urban mobility
are revitalizing our neighbourhoods and
promoting active lifestyles, while sustaining
population and economic growth.
Over the next several years, the vivaNext
system will transform the look and feel of
York Region’s Centres and Corridors with
new rapidways opening for service in
Newmarket, Richmond Hill, Vaughan and
Markham. York Region commuters will
have the option to take Viva to get where
they need to go. These new transit choices
are only the beginning of an expanding
vivaNext network that’s being built for a
growing York Region.
construction moves forward on Yonge Street
This spring, we’re moving forward with rapidway construction on Yonge Street with
work set to take place from just south of Mulock Drive to Davis Drive.
Construction along the corridor will start with relocating utilities and underground
infrastructure, building retaining walls and restoring culverts.
When opened at the end of 2018, Yonge Street will have dedicated bus rapid transit lanes for Viva
vehicles to provide fast, convenient transit. Yonge Street will look and feel more urban, with
tree-lined streets and inviting public spaces that will contribute to revitalizing and transforming
this important street.

bringing rapid transit to your doorstep

the countdown to the Davis Drive rapidway
The countdown to Viva service coming to Davis Drive has begun. By the end of December 2015, Viva will be running on Davis Drive
from Yonge Street to Highway 404 and residents and visitors will begin to experience the benefits of having rapid transit at their
doorsteps. Crews are maximizing every
opportunity to get things done as quickly as
possible while still getting you around and
through construction. Scheduling work in all
kinds of weather is always a challenge, but
we do our best to keep you informed when
and if things change.
During the summer, those travelling along Davis will notice the addition of a
signalized intersection in front of Southlake’s main entrance. Once the signals
are active, pedestrians will be able to cross safely at the lights to access the
medical buildings on each side of Davis. Viva customers going to and from the
hospital will get on and off at the vivastation in front of Southlake and cross at
the signaled crosswalk.
While there’s still work to finish, we’re in the home stretch and are eagerly
anticipating the rapidway opening this December. When complete, Davis will
be a new urban destination with attractive welcoming public areas for people
to enjoy and experience their revitalized neighbourhood.

Davis Drive will be detoured at the GO rail track over the Victoria Day

to go. Police officers and directional signs will be in the area to help
you navigate around to ensure you reach your destination safely and

expanding our connections… making it more convenient
The carpool lot located at
Davis Drive and Highway 404
is being expanded to become
a park and ride lot for
YRT/Viva and GO Transit. It
will also continue to serve
as a carpool lot owned by the
Ministry of Transportation.
This work can’t be staged while maintaining pedestrian and vehicle
flow or while the GO train is operating Monday-Friday. A number of
options for completing this work were considered and evaluated in
consultation with GO transit and the Town of Newmarket. The best
option with the least overall impact to businesses, the public and
commuters was to perform the work 24-hours a day over a long
weekend.

This year, the full length of this large
infrastructure project will be seen along
the corridor with the completion of road
widening, paving and the installation
of pedestrian-friendly boulevards and
sidewalks. The vivastations at Longford/
Parkside, Main and Southlake Regional
Health Centre are progressing right on
schedule and when in service, transit users
will enjoy the convenience of the high-tech,
innovative features that each Viva vehicle
and vivastation offers. The curbside stations
at Alexander/Huron Heights and Leslie will
also be put in place and will be open with the
rapidway at the end of the year.
While we’re counting down until the rapidway opens
in December, there is an important component of this
complex project that needs to be done. Davis needs to be widened
at the GO rail track and the existing rail infrastructure and crossing
signals need to be completely replaced.

We know living through construction hasn’t been easy and
we’re grateful for everyone’s patience as we work as quickly
as possible to complete this large undertaking.
Over the last few years, in addition to building a top-notch
transit system on Davis, a brand new underground system
comprised of storm drains, sewer pipes, gas and water mains
and telecommunications has been constructed. A whole world
of pipes and wires has been carefully replaced one at a time,
piece-by-piece. Each type of infrastructure is installed by a
different specialized crew, which is why the same work area is
sometimes revisited multiple times.
shop local – support Yonge and Davis businesses
During construction, let’s continue to shop the stores and restaurants and use the
services that bring jobs and prosperity to our local community. The businesses
along Davis and Yonge are a great example of the variety of unique restaurants,
professional offices, and boutique shops available within your local community.
Whether you’re shopping for necessities, meeting friends for dinner, or buying a gift
for that special someone, your Davis and Yonge retailers have just what you need
and are eager to help you.
The infrastructure and utilities under Davis were
buried a very long time ago and used for decades. This new
underground system, built as part of the vivaNext rapidway
project, will ensure Newmarket has updated infrastructure
that will be used by everyone for many years to come.
