CURRICULUM VITAE of Ibrahim A. Eltayeb Ibrahim was educated in government schools in Sudan. He was awarded a scholarship to read Mathematics in the United Kingdom. He graduated from the University of London in August 1968 and proceeded to read for PhD at the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne under the supervision of Professor P.H. Roberts, FRS. He returned to Sudan and took up the post of lecturer in mathematics at the University of Khartoum in April 1972. He was subsequently promoted to Senior lecturer, Reader and then to Full Professor in 1980. He was Dean of the newly established School of mathematical Sciences during the period 1981- 84. He joined the newly established Sultan Qaboos University in August 1986. He was Head of the Department of Mathematics and computing, which later became the department of mathematics and statistics. Under his chairmanship during the period 1988-1998, degrees in Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science as well as Master's degrees in Applied Mathematics, Pure Mathematics and Statistics were established for the first time in Oman. The subject of his PhD thesis was thermal convection in rotating magnetic fluids. He has over the years extended his research interests to the mathematical modelling of geophysical, environmental and industrial problems. One of the main areas of interest is that of dynamo theory which relates to the study of the non-linear partial differential equations governing the maintenance of the geomagnetic field and related problems. Another area of main interest is that of the transport of sand and dust which relates to desertification and industrial pollution. Recently he has developed an interest in the dynamics of directional solidification of fluid alloys and the flow of water in karstic aquifers. 1. PRESENT POST Professor of Applied Mathematics 2.
