Course Prerequisites: Open to students who have successfully completed Polish Level 1 or who can demonstrate equivalent
competence.
Academic Level: Intermediate
Course Unit Value: 1 (2 half-course units, taught in conjunction). Runs in (2013/14) Terms 1 and 2
Weekly Contact Hours: 4
Compulsory for: Polish and East European Studies, Russian and Polish, Russian with Polish, Modern Languages combined degrees of
which Polish is a component.
Pass required for: Progression to Year Abroad/ Polish Level 3
Open to: All SSEES undergraduates, affiliate students, also UCL undergraduates, subject to timetable and resourcing constraints
Module Outline
This is a course for students who have successfully completed Polish Level 1, or who can demonstrate equivalent competence in Polish.
The course consists of two components: comprehension and production, each of which has the value of 0.5 of a course-unit (see Course
Details above). Both components are taught in conjunction.
At the end of the module you should have fulfilled the following aims and objectives
Aims:

to build on the knowledge of Polish already acquired and to attain (in all language skills) a level of competence at which you can
function effectively in a wide range of situations

to read texts in Polish in the next stage of your degree (in courses requiring reading of literary and other texts)

to use Polish effectively during your year abroad

to develop awareness of problems of translation

to develop awareness of and interest in wider aspects of Poland and societies where Polish is spoken

to gain a sound linguistic foundation for the Polish Level 3 Course.
Objectives:

to understand a wide range of authentic spoken and written Polish from predictable topic areas; extract required information and
record it accurately and coherently in English

to manipulate spoken and written Polish with appropriate and accurate use of lexis and grammatical structures in a variety of contexts
and registers; speak with confidence and accuracy appropriate to this level about many aspects of Poland, its life and culture

to demonstrate understanding of translation by discussing problems of specific translations from and into Polish; successfully
translate a range of texts from and into Polish

to demonstrate knowledge and active use of more complex grammatical structures and a wide range of vocabulary in Polish.

Assessment Style: Examination
Polish Language Level 2A: Aural (45 minutes); written (3 hours); Polish Language Level 2B: Oral (20 minutes); written (3 hours)
Assessment Weighting: Oral (15%); aural (15%); written (70%)
Polish Language Level 2A: Aural (20%); written (80%); Polish Language Level 2B: Oral (20%); written (80%)
Feedback
Examination: Students will normally receive generic feedback on examination papers.
