Guerrilla Girls to perform at Cameron University
The internationally renowned “Guerrilla Girls” will come to Lawton for a performance at Cameron University
at 7 p.m. Friday, April 16.
Founded in 1985, the Guerrilla Girls are a radical group of female artists based in New York, but with
members across the United States. Self-described feminists, their true identities are replaced with
pseudonyms of personalities, derived from significant women artists who are now deceased. They further
maintain their anonymity from the public by wearing gorilla masks that avail them the opportunity to attract
more attention and promote awareness of their messages. The performers use humor to convey factual
information and provoke discussion about injustices in art film, politics and culture at large.
In addition to public engagements to gain support and public awareness, the group often utilizes print
campaigns, including posters, billboards, bus signs and stickers, to promote their causes.
The group has published three books, including 1985’s Confessions of the Guerrilla Girls and The Guerrilla
Girls’ Bedside Companion to the History of Western Art in 1998.
The Cameron University performance will be the latest in a series of appearances at colleges, universities,
conferences and museums that include such prestigious locales as Yale, Princeton, the Museum of Fine
Arts in Boston and the Baltimore Museum of Art. The group has also performed in Austria, Canada, France,
Germany and Spain.
