Abstract
This leadership PDW will involve providing students and junior faculty the opportunity
to discuss their leadership research in an informal, collegial roundtable setting with
prominent leadership scholars from around the globe. The junior scholars will submit
brief research proposals prior to the workshop, which will be matched with a more senior
scholar with similar research interests (not from their home university). At the workshop,
the senior scholar will then discuss these proposals with the 1-3 junior scholars, providing
insights and suggestions for future research directions. The focus will be on developing
theoretical foundations and designing high quality empirical studies. This is a great
opportunity for the junior scholars to develop their ideas, and it may even lead to future
academic collaborations.
Key Words: leadership, mentoring, research methods, international collaborations

Overview
The primary goal of this workshop is to provide junior scholars (students and
junior faculty) with the opportunity to discuss their proposed leadership research ideas
with prominent leadership scholars from around the globe. There are two intended
outcomes from this: 1) the improvement in the quality of research in the field of
leadership, and 2) the development of on-going mentoring relationships between junior
and senior leadership scholars from different universities and countries.
The PDW will be held in an informal, collegial roundtable setting to facilitate
active participation by all present. The focus of this workshop is on early stage research
projects. Participants should have an interest in either: 1) developing their theoretical
model, and/or 2) designing methodology for a future empirical study. This workshop is
not suited to participants with complete papers, who wish to receive help in publishing
them. Although the senior leadership scholars are journal editors and on editorial boards,
they wish to help with research development instead of reviewing completed papers. The
interaction during the workshop should help junior scholars in terms of developing their
theoretical models and their planned methodology. This feedback will be instrumental in
helping further develop and polish their research for publication in top academic journals.
The amount of participant involvement will be to a greater extent than the typical
Academy of Management conference session. Junior scholar participants are required to
submit brief proposals outlining their research ideas prior to the PDW. This is to provide
the senior leadership scholars additional time to consider the advice they will provide to
the junior scholars, and perhaps to even bring along some references or written comments

to assist the junior scholar. Below is the call for proposals. These will also serve to
match up the senior scholar with the junior scholars based on research interests and
methodological expertise.

This PDW is one of the few sessions at the conference which will give people a venue to
get direct feedback about their work in progress. We hope that this session will be
interactive, productive from the point of view of scholarly work, and developmental in
fostering mentoring relationships.

Why this Workshop Will Be of Interest
This PDW will be of great interest to many junior scholars interested in leadership
research. The overarching theme of this session is to answer the questions scholars face
when embarking on leadership research. This is in line with the overall theme for the
conference “The Questions We Ask”.
Junior scholar participants will be invited to bring a 1 page summary outlining
their proposed research to the PDW. These will be made available to all participants after
the PDW as a take-away, and to encourage networking among all participants.
This is a wonderful opportunity for less experience scholars to learn from these
highly respected individuals about developing leadership research that may be published
in a scholarly journal in the future. It is not often that junior scholars are able to receive
one-on-one mentoring from such scholars outside of their home university.
Relevance to OB Division:
This PDW focuses on developing research in a key topic of organizational behavior –
leadership. This topic is of growing interest and scholarship within the OB division, as
evidenced by the recent introduction of the Network of Leadership Scholars. This PDW
will be of interest to OB members studying various leadership theories and issues (e.g.,
authentic, emotional leadership, entrepreneurial leadership, transformational, leadermember exchange, etc…). It will provide an opportunity for junior scholars to collaborate
with senior scholars with have similar interests in leadership research. This clearly
supports the OB Divisions theme of “Bridging Connections”.

Relevance to International Theme Committee:
Another purpose of the workshop is to build mentoring relationships between junior
scholars and senior scholars from different parts of the world. We will be encouraging
international submissions from junior scholars, to give them the opportunity to work with
senior scholars of leadership. These senior scholars come from a range of geographic
locations: Israel, Singapore, Australia, and the USA. It is hoped that the workshop will
attract junior scholars from a variety of countries also, to help build international network
connections. This fits in with the IT committee’s goal of expanding the Academy
internationally and integrating international members into the Academy.
Relevance to RM Division:
Since this PDW aims to assist junior scholars with developing their theoretical
foundations and research methodology, it is suited to members of the RM Division. The
focus is on improving the research methods scholars are using to learn more about
leadership in organizations. We encourage the use of innovative methods, and will be
open to proposals covering a wide variety of methods (for example, grounded theory,
experimental, survey, archival, and observational studies)

Workshop Format
Welcome
10 minutes
Introduction to the workshop – Dr Marie Dasborough.
Round Table
Discussions
90 minutes
Junior participants will be able to join each senior leadership
scholar at a table according to their similar research interests for
an informal discussion of their research proposals.
Examples of research interest groups may include (but are not
limited to):
Authentic Leadership
Leadership: Emotions, and Emotional Intelligence
Leadership: Power and Influence
Entrepreneurial Leadership
Leader-Member Exchange
Transformational Leadership
Leadership in Teams
Plenary
Session
20 minutes
Each of the roundtables will be asked to report back to the
whole group about their key learning points, and the discussion
will then be open to all participants to ask questions of any of
the senior leadership scholars in an open panel format.
Room Setup & Time
Based on the interest from junior leadership scholars in developing mentoring
relationships, it is expected that there will be around 24 participants (8 senior scholars,
plus around 16 junior scholars). To facilitate the discussions, we request a banquet style
room with 3 tables and about 8 chairs around each round table.
The preferred day and time for this PDW is Saturday afternoon. Many senior scholars are
unable to attend on Friday, and some may be involved with Sunday sessions. We request
a 2 hour session for the PDW.
Statement
I have received signed statements from all intended participants agreeing to participate
for the entire workshop, AND these participants are not in violation of the Three + Three
rule.
