Student Trustee Jackson called the meeting to order at 9:36 a.m.
A quorum was not yet present.
The following colleges were present: LACC, LAMC, LAPC and WLAC
Absent: ELAC (arrived at 9:30 a.m.), LAHC, LASC, LATTC, and LAVC (arrived
at 10:00 a.m.)
PUBLIC SPEAKERS
Trustee Mona Field presented a video to the Student Affairs Committee that
provided general voting information from the League of Women Voters’
website.
Ms. Francesca Vega, Candidate, LACCD Board of Trustees, Seat No. 1,
shared her personal background with the Student Affairs Committee
regarding her interest in running in the March 3, 2015 LACCD Board
elections.
Mr. Denny Zane, Transportation Consultant, discussed “MoveLA,” an
opportunity for future funding for student transit passes in Los Angeles
County relating to California's Cap-and-Trade Program.
Mr. Zane
encouraged the Student Affairs Committee members to form an Ad Hoc
Committee to meet with the Mayor’s staff about this issue.
(Mr. Ramel Lopez, ELAC, arrived at 9:30 a.m.)
A quorum was now present.
Mr. Nehasi Lee, Black Caucus of the California Community Colleges,
encouraged the Student Affairs Committee to participate in the upcoming
“March in March” to be held in Sacramento, California.

Mr. DeShawn Williams, member of the public, requested the help of the
Student Affairs Committee to sponsor a 5K marathon that he is organizing to
benefit the cause of reducing childhood obesity.
There being no objection, Discussion Items was taken out of order on the
agenda.
DISCUSSION ITEMS
Presentation: “Acorns,” a financial application for savings and investment
Mr. Tony Lee, CEO and Mr. Carl Dickerson, Founder and Chairman of Acorns,
shared a presentation regarding how to use Acorns, a micro-investing
application that can invest money and create a personalized investment
portfolio.
(Mr. Sukhsimran Sandhu, LAVC, arrived at 10:00 a.m.)
Presentation: “Wear Red for Women” to increase awareness about heart
disease in women
Ms. Katrelia Walker, Total Wellness Program, LACCD, discussed the Coalition
for Wellness’ initiative to invite everyone wear red on February 25, 2015 to
increase awareness about heart disease in women. Also on February 25,
2015, a display will be set up in the Educational Services Center Board Room
foyer in recognition of this event, and student flash mob activities will be
coordinated between Ms. Walker and the ASO/ASU/ASG Presidents at each
college campus.
There being no objection, Liaison Reports was taken out of order on the
agenda.
LIAISON REPORTS
District Office Report
Ms. Bobbi Kimble discussed the implementation of the Student Information
System’s negative check-off process for ASO fees.
Only the $1.00
representation fee is mandatory for students to pay, the ASO fee is not a
mandatory fee for students. March 16, 2015 is the deadline for Student
Trustee election application forms and petitions with signatures to be filed in
each campus’ Student Services/Student Activities Office in order for the
candidate names to appear on the ballot. Title IX training software is being
purchased and will soon be available at each college. California state law is
changing regarding the California Community Colleges Board of Governor’s
(BOG) Fee Waiver, which requires LACCD Board Rule 8200 to be revised.
The changes specify that students will lose the BOG Fee Waiver if they are
not in good academic standing.

LACCD BOT ASO-Sponsored Candidate Forums in February 2015
Student Trustee Jackson announced that the candidate forums scheduled to
be held in February will be discussed after the March 3, 2015 election at the
next SAC meeting.
There being no objection, the Student Affairs Committee continued the
Liaison Reports.
LIAISON REPORTS (continued)
ASO/ASU/ASG Advisors Report
Ms. Sonia Lopez reported on the need to schedule regional elections so that
all elections can be arranged around the same time period. Only two
colleges will attend the upcoming “March in March” in Sacramento, and ELAC
is not attending. Applications for the Student Trustee elections are now
available in the ELAC ASO Office, and the election is also being advertised on
Facebook. Ms. Lopez will check with all ASO Advisors to find out if there are
any issues with the negative check-off process at each college. ELAC was
last amongst the LACCD colleges to start collecting student representation
fees. Fees were not collected in the Fall 2014 semester. About 75 clubs are
using the ASO budget at ELAC, so Ms. Lopez will check with the college to
make sure the fees are being collected correctly.
Chief Student Services Officers (CSSO) Report
None.
District Academic Senate (DAS) Report
None.
There being no objection, Associated Student Body Presidents’ Reports was
taken out of order on the agenda.
ASSOCIATED STUDENT BODY PRESIDENTS’ REPORTS
The following individuals reported on issues, activities, and events at their
respective campuses:
Mr. Alex Oloo, LAPC.
There being no objection, two additional public speakers were permitted to
address the committee.

her personal background with the Student Affairs Committee regarding her

Ms. Maria Quintero, Candidate, LACCD Board of Trustees, Seat No. 1, shared
her personal background with the Student Affairs Committee regarding her
interest in running for the Board of Trustees in the March 3, 2015 election.
There being no objection, the Student Affairs Committee continued the
Associated Student Body Presidents’ Reports.

respective campuses:

Sandhu, LAVC; and Mr. Ramel Lopez, ELAC.
STUDENT TRUSTEE MONTHLY REPORT
Student Trustee Jackson reported on the following topics:
• Student Trustee Jackson stated that he will follow up with each
individual college ASO/ASU/ASG Office regarding any issues
experienced with the negative check-off process and the reconciliation
of ASO/ASU/ASG budget accounts.
• Student Trustee Jackson will propose a resolution in support of
President Obama’s tuition-free initiative for community colleges to be
considered at next month’s SAC meeting.
• Student Trustee Jackson reported on his lobbying experience in
Sacramento with four other SAC students that was coordinated
through the LACCD Chancellor’s and Board of Trustees Offices.
• Student Trustee Jackson emphasized the importance of students to
participate in the Accreditation process at each college.
• Student Trustee Jackson asked for each ASO/ASU/ASG President to
share their goals for the rest of the semester.
• Student Trustee Jackson asked for volunteers to participate in the Ad
Hoc Committee to meet with the Mayor’s staff regarding California's
Cap-and-Trade Program.
MATTERS FOR/OF THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES
Discussion ensued regarding food services for each college, the discontinued
campus shuttle for Los Angeles Mission College, the lack of a Veteran’s
Center at West Los Angeles College, and the need for Athletic scholarships
and transfer assistance at Los Angeles Valley College.

RESOURCE TABLE STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE – Justin Blackburn – February
11, 2015 (LASC) and February 25, 2015 (ESC)
Mr. Justin Blackburn (LASC) will serve as the Student Representative at the
Resource Table for the Board meetings of February 11, 2015 to be held at
LASC and also on February 25, 2015 to be held at the Educational Services
Center.

SUMMARY – NEXT MEETING
The next regular meeting of the Student Affairs Committee is scheduled for
Friday, March 13, 2015 at 9:00 a.m. This meeting will be held at the LACCD
Educational Services Center in the Board Room. The deadline for submitting
agenda items is Monday, March 2, 2015.
