Interdisciplinary Program
INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY
(Interdepartmental)
To be determined, coordinator.
The Department of Computer Science in the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) and the Department of
Information Systems and Operations Management in the Cameron School of Business (CSB) offer a
multi-disciplinary program leading to a BS degree in Information Technology (IT). The program closely
follows the guidelines set forth by professional societies for such programs including the Association for
Computing Machinery, the Association of Information Systems, and the IEEE Computer Society.
The program develops students’ skills in the critical and practical understanding of information
technology and prepares them for information technology-related work and/or further study at the
graduate level. The curriculum provides a foundation for information technology professionals to have a
perspective of the rapidly expanding and evolving science of technology and how it can be managed and
leveraged to support business activities. Students may declare a major in Information Technology after
completion of CIT110 and two additional CIT/CSC/MIS courses at the 200-level with a grade point
average of 2.5 or higher.
Computer Competency Requirement: To satisfy the computer competency requirement for the
B.S. degree in information technology a student must successfully complete the CSC 105 or MIS 213.
Oral Communication Competency Requirement: To satisfy the oral communication competency
requirement for the B.S. degree in information technology a student must successfully complete CIT 411.
Applied Learning Requirement: To satisfy the applied learning requirement for the B.S. degree in
information technology a student must successfully complete CIT 352.
Requirements for a Major in Information Technology for the B.S. degree: 65 hours. A student must
complete the following courses to fulfill the degree requirements: LIB 103, CIT 110, CSC 121, MAT
151, CIT 204, CIT 215, STT 215 or QMM 280, CSC 221, CIT 310, MIS 315, MIS 316, CIT 324, MIS
323 or CSC 344, CIT 352, CSC 385, CIT 410, CIT 411, CIT 445, and CIT 480. Nine additional credit
hours chosen from either CSC or MIS at the 300-level or higher are also required.
A grade point average of “C” (2.00) or better computed over all the courses used to fulfill the
requirements of the major is required; in addition, a grade of “C-” or better for all the courses used to
fulfill the requirements of the major is required.
Requirements for a Minor in Information Technology: 18 hours. A minor in information technology
requires completion of 18 hours, including 12 hours of core courses and 6 hours of electives. At least 3
elective hours must be at the 300 level or above.
Core Courses: CIT 110, CSC 112 or CSC 121 or MIS 216 or equivalent; LIB 103; and any 3-credit 200
or higher level CSC or MIS course.
Elective Courses: Any 200 or higher level CSC course (not used to fulfill the core course requirement);
ART 220 (FST 220), ART 320 (FST 320); CHM 425; COM 260; CRW 319; EDN 303, 416; ENG 204,
314, 319; FST 201, 395, 497; GGY 224, 422, 424; Any 200 or higher level MIS course (not used to fulfill
