During the program (in the auditorium), Pat Buckley Moss shared that "my passion in life is education
and schools." She was recognized by VT for her philanthropic and artistic commitment to "arts based
education."

From April 6 to 11, 2014, Gertrude Mwangala Akapelwa-Ehueni, the Vice Chancellor for the Victoria
Falls University (VFU), Livingstone, Zambia, visited Virginia Tech to identify areas of cooperation
between her university and Virginia Tech. The Victoria Falls University is a private university which is still
in its infancy. It is, therefore, looking for partners to help in the development of the university. Currently,
Victoria Falls University has four schools, namely: School of Education; School of Information and
Communication Technology (ICT); School of Business and Finance; and School of Hotel and Tourism
Management. During the visit, the Vice Chancellor had meetings with the School of Education and the
Department of Hospitality & Tourism Management, in addition to meeting President Charles Steger and

Claire K. Robbins is Assistant Professor of Higher Education at Virginia Tech. Her research interests
include the development and construction of social identities, ally behaviors among students and
educators, and the experiences of students and educators in STEM disciplines. She is a Co-Chair of
Next Gen 2014 and a member of the ACPA 2014 Convention Planning Team.
In addition to Dr. Robbin's co-chairing duties she coauthored an engaging blog with Dr. Thomas C.
Segar of Shepherd University about the planning and implementation process for Nex Gen.

Kami Patrizio is is an assistant professor of Educational Leadership
Abstract: Conflicting perspectives about the focus educational leadership programs (Breault, 2010;
Hess & Kelly, 2007; Levine, 2005), a dearth of research about leader education course design and
content (Hess & Kelly, 2007), and limited scholarship about leader educators classroom experiences
(Frick & Riley, 2010) render studying of leader education practices necessary and important. My self
study addresses this need, examining the ways that place theory and imagery can be used to counter
forces of globalization that diminish agency and relational learning in educational leadership. I use place
theory (Eacott, 2010; Gruenewald, 2003; Steele, 1981) to examine the empirical, hermeneutic, and
educational leadership.

Brett Jones is an associate professor of Educational Psychology
Abstract: The purpose of this study was to test a partial version of the domain identification model
proposed by Osborne and Jones (2011). We investigated the measurement of the MUSIC Model of
Academic Motivation (Jones, 2009) and four mediating variables (i.e., engineering identification,
engineering utility, engineering program belonging, and engineering program expectancy) separately,
followed by the full structural model which also included likelihood of engineering major and career.
Based on the fit indices, we documented strong evidence for model data fit in all three cases. Except
engineering program belonging, the other three mediating variables had significant relations with
engineering major and career. The success component of the MUSIC model had the greatest impact on
all of the four mediating variables.

Presenter: Kami Patrizio
Purpose: This poster is intended to engage session participants in dialogue about the role of agency in
their educational practice.
Perspective(s): The current accountability context that pervades the field of education renders
educational leaders' process of "becoming" complicated. Many are challenged to learn as they are
compelled to react, instead of reflect, by the pressures of standardization and testing. Across the world,
educators struggle to find agency in their own learning. This self-study research is predicated on the idea
that people are "in the process of becoming - as unfinished, incomplete beings in and with a likewise
unfinished reality" (Freiere, 2000, p. 84). Katz-Buonincuontro (2011) suggests that "expanding
leadership preparation methods emphasize applied and experiential aspects of praxis as well as a focus
on self-understanding as a way to improve leadership performance (p.4). Indeed, her research using artsbased methodologies to structure intensive, educational leadership workshops suggests that artistic
methods can expose biases and gaps in leaders' knowledge thereby facilitating the adoption of
alternative perspectives and new ideas (Katz-Buonincuontro, 2008). Additionally, empowering students
by allowing them artistic expression offers students "an alternative form of voice" (Chio & Fandt, 2007, p.
487). So empowered, graduate students can experience what it means to be ...authors or agents of their
own lives and meanings...[giving] them the right to speak but also create[ing] a safer interpersonal and
social forum for them to do so as the stories to be told are singularly theirs and their alone (Chio & Fandt,
2007, p. 488). I hope to create a classroom environment where the aspiring leaders that are my students
can experience agency in their learning. However, I have long felt that my extensive use of dialogical
techniques might be improved through the use of artistic methodologies. This research relies on

"In 2008 I landed the perfect job for a rehabilitation counselor, special research faculty for a grant-funded
assistive technology service with home base at Virginia Tech. After nearly five fun, productive years the
grant and my job ended, and I secured my current half-time position tracking and documenting about
1,350 computers and other items assigned to School of Education faculty and staff. I already knew
nearly everyone in SOE, including my supervisor, Diana Wu and had years observing which faculty and
staff were likely going to be the most challenging to my fixed assets wrangling. Recently the School of
Education successfully completed its 2013 inventory, my first as Fixed Assets Wrangler. Humor and
wonderful colleagues make it worthwhile to daily hunt for a parking space, and I enjoy working with the
real people that are custodians of the "stuff" I inventory." ~ Rick Barrow
