Nov. 22, 2013 – Faculty, Staff, and Students, have a Very Happy Thanksgiving Holiday!!!!!!!!!
VT-STEM K-12 outreach initiative
activity
What is STEM? Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics are four disciplines that merged
together to become a mantra for economic development, teacher preparation, curriculum reform, career
pipeline initiatives, and community action. (description by Sue Magliaro)
We continue to have numerous impressive STEM research-supported projects going on in our
School at this time ~ these cover an array of educative topics in the areas of teaching and
learning.

STEM K-12 OUTREACH INITIATIVE, PERSPECTIVE OF A "STEM CHEERLEADER"
Sue Magliaro, VT-STEM Director, has been working on the advancement of the STEM agenda for over
eight years. She serves as the director of the university's VT-STEM K-12 outreach initiative as well as a
co-PI on the Virginia Initiative for Science Teaching and Achievement (VISTA), the state-wide $34m
science teacher professional development endeavor. Recently, she has lead the VT-STEM initiative to
join a network of 54 STEM centers located on university campuses across the nation. Together, VTSTEM, VISTA, and the National Conversation on STEM Education Centers are working hand-in-hand to
bring awareness to STEM education in Virginia and across the nation.
As part of the implementation of the university's "Plan for a New Horizon," VT-STEM is expanding its
network to become a regional catalyst for STEM education in Southwest Virginia. Over the next 4-5
years, the network will expand from the historic partnerships between the university community and local
K-12 schools to include the Science Museum of Western Virginia, the Roanoke-Blacksburg, Technology
Council, and many other advocates for STEM education. This regional focus aligns with the need to
have a collective and collaborative effort at advancing the STEM agenda. By moving the work to regional
visibility, VT-STEM has the potential to impact positively the quality of life in Southwest Virginia, and
serve as a model for our state and nation.

While economic and community development are clear drivers for the focus on STEM, Magliaro sees her
work as a way to provide access and opportunity for all. A clear advocate for high quality, public
education, Sue notes that "In the very least, we need an informed citizenry." Noting immediately that her
areas of expertise are educational psychology and teacher professional development, and not the STEM
disciplines, Magliaro considers herself a "STEM cheerleader." She contends that the type of learning that
can come from a problem-based integrative STEM curriculum to be a very valuable pathway for student
success: "Our students need to be actively engaged in inquiry; they need to take risks and become
autonomous learners." Ultimately, an integrative design-centered pedagogy can be the perfect
opportunity to engage students in creative and critical thinking.
