Syllabus Change Description: I have added to the syllabus a learning objective “To utilize architecture
and materials unique to an area in performance.” I have also added lessons and assignments on
“utilizing foreign objects” and on “site specific performances.” These changes are all based around
finding natural environments within our bioregion to utilize as the architecture where we work, and in
certain situations, as the materials with which we work. This will include several lessons that will be
taught in a variety of areas specific to the local bioregion in order to raise the students’ awareness of
their local bioregion here at the University and in Missoula. The progressive lessons and assignments will
then integrate them further in understanding their work as actors creating stage combat performances
as work that can be intrinsically linked to their bioregion, and can benefit from knowledge and
experience specific to their bioregion. I hope that these changes will lead to a stronger connection
between the students and their local bioregion as they engage in other activities in this region, as well as
practices that may be continued if they move to other regions. As a result of developing a stronger
connection with the local bioregion, I believe they will become stronger advocates of environmentally
sustainable practices in their personal activity, and possibly as it relates to public activity.
Assignment:
Physical Performance III: Stage Combat
Site Specific Fight
Choreograph a fight set by the Red River Rocks on the Kim Williams Trail. Utilize the architecture and
materials of the location to inform the cause of the conflict, as well as the development of the fight.
Utilize natural materials as found objects that you will use in the illusions (*Be aware not to damage any
natural materials). The resolution of the conflict should come as a result of the natural materials or
surrounding natural architecture of the location.
Suggestion: Take time to become familiar with the area before beginning to choreograph your fight.
Consider the intricacies of the location. What natural materials exist there that you didn't initially notice.
Develop a story of the natural place involving everything that is present there, and allow this narrative
to inform the narrative, objects and illusions of your fight.
Participants: 2
Time: 3-5 Minutes.
