Financial statement

Rochelle did contract for $800 for the chip timing of the Diploma Dash so GrizMart shows an encumbrance for that amount.

Resolutions - None

Reports from standing committees

Executive Committee: Jen reported that Luke Alford is the University Budget Committee representative for the unions. He is the new MPEA president. Echo Ryan is the new MPEA vice president.

CVC: Angie reported there is nothing planned at the moment. Last thing was the ice skating which was well attended with 80 people, roughly.

Fundraising: Diploma Dash registration is underway. A Diploma Dash flyer will be in Glow Run gift bags. Wellness center hasn’t done anything to promote race. Angela asked, “Was there any increase in registration from promotion on the oval?” No, not really. We have 40 registrants currently. We could go

out on the oval again. Rochelle sent the flyer out again. The Wellness people didn’t promote this race.

They did promote the marathon. Angela, “We did contact the Limeade people about making it an event but it’s only a university-wide event.”

Survey and Assessment: Grace has generated a rough draft of the survey and will distribute that.

Nominations and Elections: Denise stated, “I was sent the names of 12 senators whose terms are expiring.

Senators should start thinking about people who might be interested. Nominations are due at the end of

March. New senators start in June. We elect officers in June.” Candy suggested including the list of names for those who can’t continue their term. Notify Julie and/or Jen.

Scholarship: Kris stated the committee will meet in mid-March. Selections will be made by the end of that meeting. We have some money but donations need to be earmarked. Judy, “Between the two funds that exist we have $1,500, but there is a lot of money sitting in Visibility for the Diploma Dash.” Maria asked, “Which scholarship year does the Diploma Dash money go to?” Judy answered, “It doesn’t matter. It goes to the same account. When the race is over we will look at the costs and profits and determine what we can give for scholarships and transfer it over.” Gloria checked the bylaws that state,

“The total amount of scholarships awarded shall not exceed $3,000. Unclaimed funds remain in the account.” Rochelle, “At the end of the day, the race is almost pure profit since everything is donated. If we want to grow the scholarship fund then we donate to the faculty/staff senate Foundation campaign in the month of April.” The next Staff Senate meeting is in Brantly Hall to honor the scholarship recipients,

April 13, 2016. We will invite the offices that donated to the Dash.

New Business

The M Store is offering a 15% discount to faculty and staff.

Staff Appreciation is April 29. This year’s theme is circus. They have asked if the Staff Senate would host a booth. We will have a signup sheet at the next meeting.

Toastmasters report from Roz. There is a charter fee of $125 dollars. New members pay $75. It enrolls the individual, gives you a magazine, manuals. The $75 is a one-time fee. Former Toastmasters Club at the University was dissolved so their charter no longer exists. Toastmasters is primarily for the staff because faculty and students are not as consistent as staff. Toastmasters Club does not compete with training that Cindy Boies offers. Training that Toastmasters offers includes running meetings, public speaking, difficult co-workers. It is usually during lunch hour. What is exciting is the communication piece. It is especially exciting for staff as an opportunity to develop a voice. $75 pays for a six month term, and then you can continue if you want. Angela, “The customer service issue of listening to understand kind of feeds into it.” Kris, “A coworker of mine was in Toastmasters and loved it. She got a lot out of it.” Maria, “I have a concern about the $75, knowing how pinched people are. How are we going to manage that?” Roz, “If there is no personal investment, people will not come. We need to communicate what you are actual getting. We can’t maintain this with inconsistency.” Edi donated $125 to pay the charter fee.

Sustainability:

Eva Rocke: There are enthusiastic students who are pressuring the administration for the solar parking project.

One of them asked President Engstrom to sign a letter supporting the project, if we can get outside funding. A company, Cypress Creek, in East Missoula is interested and wants the tax credits. They need to feel comfortable with how the project works. We had a meeting with Northwestern Energy and the President. The project is slow, but it has not died. Tax credits have been extended for an additional four years.

Eva, “Another big project I am working on with Jordan Hess from Transportation is a study about how parking is managed. Currently it is managed by UMPD with busses and bikes by ASUM. We are reviewing strategies for transportation on campus recommended by a firm in Seattle.” Jenn asked, “I think it would be great under one

umbrella but that’s how UMPD is funded. How would that effect?” Eva, “It’s going to be at an administration level, but we shouldn’t be making parking decisions based on the fact that it funds the police. Focus groups are this afternoon and next week 4:30-5:30.” Angie, “Is this discussion including bus service?” Eva, “Yes, they are paying for it. We want to manage the parking problem holistically.”

Eva reported that Campus Thrift is working with Residence Life and the Recycle Team. On March 24 there will be a college conscience road tour from 11-3 on the Mall to help college students find products that create less impact. We will have a ton of freebies and a town hall gathering in the evening with the students. Earth Week is coming up, and there is a new garden by the University Golf Course.

Toastmasters:

Robin __?__ and Suzanne Hanson from Toastmasters attending the meeting. They are working with Roz to form the Toastmasters Charter. We still need to decide how Staff Senate is participating. A concern is the $75 dollars per member cost. Roz reported she has five people interested and has not yet publicized the establishment of the group. There are many Toastmasters Clubs at universities. Having access to facilities makes it easier. The administration is supportive of lunchtime activities. Twenty members is the minimum number for a club.

Parking difficulties make it hard for non-campus members to attend at the University. We do not want to compete with Staff Ambassadors. April 1 will be the start date. Rochelle encouraged the Club to do some statistical analysis. Staff Senate may be willing to help in the future. Possibly departments would be willing to help financially once the Club is established. There is no payment plan for prorating a new member’s $75. Roz will start the charter. Judy will help with promotion, but the Toastmasters Club manages itself. Roz would like

Staff Senate’s endorsement. Is the membership fee tax-deductible? Roz will get a demonstration meeting scheduled.

If you have feedback regarding the Customer Service handout, send it to Mario Schultke.

The meeting was adjourned at 11:48 am.

NEXT MEETING: Wednesday, April 13, in the President’s Room of Brantly Hall
