Re:
Summer 2016 Hiring Guidelines
Summer is a busy time of the year for many departments for which temporary staff may be
needed. To ensure that hiring departments can have adequate temporary staff in place for their
programmatic needs this summer, please submit position descriptions and job postings via the
PV TALENT System beginning April 26, 2016 through May 6, 2016. The position description must
provide specific job responsibilities and required deliverables for temporary hires approved by
the Office of Human Resources. Following the aforementioned timeframe will allow for the
Office of Human Resources to post all positions in early and mid-May so that temporary summer
hires can be identified by June 1, 2016.
For consideration of temporary, summer employment interested applicants including students
not enrolled for summer must apply via the PV TALENT Online Application System and should
have met the minimum qualifications for the position of hire. Search/Selection Committees are
not required. However, hiring departments will be required to document their selection
methodologies and retain for the necessary period of time as required by the University’s records
retention schedule.
Here are a few reminders related to the summer hiring process that you may want to keep in
mind:

Departments that have specific hire dates for Summer Camp & Summer
Enrichment Programs will need to contact the Office of Human Resources and
provide the specific program dates to establish a scheduled hire date and New
Employee Orientation. Please provide this information to the Office of Human
Resources by May 6, 2016.

Summer Camp hires may not be offered more than the minimum hourly rate
(non-exempt positions) or the minimum monthly salary (exempt) of the pay grade
that the position is listing in Appendix D of the University’s Classification &
Compensation Plan. Salaries for programs less than a full pay period for exempt
positions will need to be pro-rated to reflect a salary amount for the period of
time to actually be worked.


Existing PVAMU employees are required to clear a background check prior to
working with the Summer Programs.

Students currently on an F-1 visa and enrolled in one (1) course of 3 credit hours or
less, then the temporary hire may not work more than 50% effort = 20 hours per
week. This requirement must be communicated to the hire during the verbal offer
stage.
All prospective temporary hires will be processed through the Human Resources Office. These
hires are required to attend New Employee Orientation. Departments will be notified by Human
Resources via email that the new temporary employee has been approved to attend New
Employee Orientation.
