Math -
Students this week in math reviewed measurement! Students enjoyed measuring different objects in
the classroom. They were measuring objects and comparing the objects lengths. Students also enjoyed a 3 Act
Task. We reviewed our 6 practices of thinkers and were challenging ourselves with a picture of footprints.
Students challenged themselves to determine lengths of feet, how long is a person‛s stride, and even calculating
the number of toes that were in all of the footprints! Ask your child to tell you more! We will be starting a 2 week
unit on designing a zoo. Students will design and determine the area and perimeter of animal‛s habitats in the zoo!
Word Study-
Second graders began the week by completing their end of the year Developmental Spelling Inventory
(DSI). This spelling assessment is not something your child can study for. The DSI shows teachers what your child
understands about sounds and spelling patterns. We have completed this assessment 3 times over the year and students have
shown so much spelling growth. We also practiced dictionary skills this week. We began by learning the purpose of the a
dictionary and exploring both print and digital dictionaries. We then completed various activities where students had to find
guide words, parts of speech, syllables, pronunciation, and definitions. Students are now dictionary experts!
Social Studies-
This week in Social Studies, students learned about needs and wants and goods and services. We made

a t-chart to brainstorm different needs and wants, as well as goods and services. Please ask your child to tell you the
difference between needs and wants, as well as goods and services. We also read the book
Extra Cheese Please
, to help us learn
about natural resources. This book discussed the journey of how the dairy cow‛s milk traveled from the farm to the top of a
Friday night pizza. We also focused on the resources of corn and trees, and discussed how these resources can be used in
various ways. We will continue our Economics Unit next week.
