Information & Instructions
WHAT IS OUTDOOR EDUCATION?
Outdoor Education, often referred to as “camp” is a three-day,
two-night experience at Heartland Environmental School.
Students learn through hands-on activities, field hikes,
classes, and labs using the natural environment as our
classroom. Your child’s classroom teachers and exceptional
juniors and seniors from the three Dublin high schools
accompany our students as assistants and cabin leaders.

What You Can Do Now
COMPLETE ALL ATTACHED FORMS
All forms must be completed, signed, and, in some cases,
NOTARIZED before your child can attend. DO NOT sign the forms
that need to be notarized until you are at the notary. Notary services
are typically available at your bank, post office, or local government
agency.
PREPARE FOR OUTDOOR EDUCATION
Please carefully look over the packing list, and help your child to
prepare. Take note that students are NOT permitted to bring cell
phones. Teachers or Heartland staff will call home in the event of an
emergency or illness. The address, website, and number of Heartland
is on the front of this paper.
Students should use a duffel bag, small carry-on suitcase or triplelined trash bag to pack their gear. Your student must be able to carry
their own bag, as they will carry it to their cabin upon arrival. Please
clearly label all bags with your student’s name.
MEDICATIONS AND DIETARY NEEDS
The medical form must include ALL MEDICATIONS your child will
need to take. If these are prescription medications, a doctor’s
signature is also required in order for these to be administered. Over
the counter medications can be signed for by a parent in order to be
given. If your child already receives medication at school, a new
medication form must be completed and signed, and a new or
duplicate bottle sent in for this medication to be taken.
*All medication must be sent in the original container it was dispensed
in. Please make sure the dosage(s) and time(s) the medication is to
be given are clearly marked on the container and medical form.
Medication should be brought to school in the original container, put in
a Ziploc bag labeled with name, and handed to the team leader the
morning of departure. Do not pack any meds!
*Indicate any special needs, dietary or physical restrictions your
child might have and notify Lori Nickel, Outdoor Education
Coordinator (nickel_lori@dublinschools.net) by Friday, September
16th so Heartland staff can be notified and prepared.
The TripTHE AFTERNOON OF RETURN:
THE MORNING OF DEPARTURE: OCTOBER 12TH
Parents are advised to bring their child to school the day of
departure, as busses cannot accommodate the baggage. Students
need to be at school by 8:15 am on October 12th.
Place your travel gear in your teacher’s homebase
classroom. Make sure ALL gear is clearly labeled with your
name.
Hand any medications to your team leader upon arrival.
Medications should be labeled with your first and last name
in a Ziploc bag.
WHILE YOUR STUDENT IS AWAY
Send your student a one-way email to let them know you’re thinking
about them at http://heartlandoe.com/email-a-camper/. Emails
are delivered during dinner.
OCTOBER 14TH
Students typically return to school around 1:45pm and may be picked
up at that time.
Plan to arrive at 1:45 for pick up (please park in the lot or sit
in the parent drop-off area. DO NOT pull in front of the
school, as this will block the busses!)
Please wait until all luggage is unloaded before leaving
with your student.
Find your team leader and collect your remaining meds.
If you are unable to pick up your student, please arrange a
ride with another parent as students are not permitted to
ride home on the bus with all their gear.
