SUBJECT:
American Council on Education – Internationalization Lab Task Force
Because of its internationalization efforts, the University of Montana has been selected as one of thirteen
institutions invited to join the American Council on Education's (ACE) 2014 -2016 Internationalization
Laboratory Cohort. This prestigious program provides an opportunity for universities to identify strengths
and weaknesses with current programs and policies, gauge interest in international engagement, accelerate
progress on internationalization and ultimately enhance the cross cultural learning environment.
I am writing to invite you to serve on the Task Force for the university’s Internationalization Laboratory. I
believe your valuable and informed perspectives will contribute to the success of this important endeavor.
The Task Force will be overseen by the Steering Committee co-chaired by Office of International
Programs Director, Paulo Zagalo-Melo, and James Burchfield, Dean of the College of Forestry and
Conservation. The work of the Task Force is expected to conclude by the end of spring semester 2016.
The Task Force membership was formed with a goal of ensuring a broad representation of campus
constituencies affected by the Internationalization Lab while recognizing the realities of meeting an
aggressive timeline and integrating complicated individual schedules. The group will be composed of
representatives from the faculty and staff. The Task Force is expected to seek input from a wide range of
faculty, staff and student voices so that its deliberations include points of view that may not be
represented by Task Force members.

The Task Force will be co-chaired by Nancy Gass, Associate Director for Comprehensive
Internationalization, Office of International Programs and Jeanne Loftus, Director, Global Leadership
Initiative. Nancy and Jeanne will coordinate the staff supporting the Task Force. The first meeting of the
Task Force is scheduled for Tuesday, November 25, 2014, from 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. during the visit of
Barbara Hill, Senior Associate for Internationalization, American Council on Education. Dr. Hill’s visit
will officially initiate UM’s participation in the Internationalization Lab.
Please reply to Nancy Gass, x2212 or Nancy.Gass@umontana.edu, to confirm your ability to serve.
Thank you for your willingness to contribute to this very important effort.
