Carolyn Rolfson Sargis Award
The Classified Staff Council is pleased to announce
that Ann Klosinski, University Centers, has been selected
as the recipient of the 2014 Carolyn Rolfson Sargis Award.
Ann has worked at UW-Stevens Point for 30 years,
starting in the Admissions Office (4 years), moving to the
Foundation Office (4 years), then to Residential Living
(14 years) and settling in the University Centers as a
University Conference Coordinator for the past 8 years. In
each of her positions, Ann worked hard to improve processes and develop professional
relationships with her colleagues and clients, both on and off campus.
As the University Conference Coordinator in the Campus Reservations Office
of the University Centers, Ann has the responsibility to coordinate approximately 7000 events, most often scheduled in
the Dreyfus University Center. As the primary event planner for the DUC events, Ann works with student organizations
on weekly meetings as well as special events such as the International Dinner and the Soul Food Dinner. With the
constant turnover of students in leadership roles for student organizations, Ann essentially “starts over” with the
training process for these student event planners each year and does so with grace, professionalism and patience.
Ann is the primary contact for all of the high-profile events like the Board of Regents, Founder’s Day
Celebrations, Homecoming, New Student Orientation as well as the many large conferences including Destination
Imagination, STEM Conferences, the Wisconsin Center for Environmental Education, and Wisconsin Association of
School Councils. Ann’s service includes large events planned by off-campus groups including all private-party
weddings and community events such as Travel Guard Holiday Party, Whiting Dance Club, and events involving
Ministry Health Care. Given the high expectations of these clients, Ann’s excellent customer service skills and
professionalism are paramount.
Ann is responsible for training full-time and student staff members on the event management system (EMS), a
web-based reservations and calendar program. She ensures the equipment inventory lists are up to date, to avoid
overcommitting equipment and staff. Ann develops and administers the budget for her unit, performing account
reconciliations; hires, trains and supervises the student staff; as well as administers University Centers, UWSP, and
UW System facility use policies.
As a member of the University Centers full-time staff, Ann served as a key representative to the University
Centers Advisory and Policy Board, a sub-committee of student government and the shared governance body that
guides policies, fee structure and practices for the University Centers. Ann was a member of this group for many
years, providing historical perspective and serving as an advocate for students in how policies were set and
interpreted. Further, Ann served on a number of campus search and screen committees including, most recently, the
Assistant Director for the Alumni Relations Office.
Going above and beyond her role in managing the EMS, Ann created opportunities for students and staff to
request space in the academic buildings and afforded all Campus Facility Managers access to the system to reserve
space in their respective buildings. Ann created this on-line process for the University Centers spaces many years ago
and was instrumental in transitioning the rest of the campus to this system, using the campus software platform.
One of Ann’s most significant University contributions is related to the development of the Campus Calendar
for UWSP. As a member of the Campus Calendar committee, Ann worked on this project for over six years. Her
involvement with the committee included helping the staff in University Relations and Communications adopt and fully
implement the Event Management System (EMS). With her guidance, the calendar was populated with a myriad of
campus events resulting in an open and transparent view of campus facilities and activities. She spent many hours
working behind the scenes creating templates, training facility managers and consumers on the system to ensure the
success of the Campus Calendar project.
Ann served as the Blood Drive Coordinator for the Village of Plover for two years. She is an 11-gallon donor
(that’s 88 pints over 30 years) and continues to donate blood on a regular basis.
Since 2009, Ann serves as a Volunteer Legal Guardian for Portage County, taking on the medical and
financial responsibilities for at-risk elderly and disabled residents who have no other appropriate guardians. She often
serves two or more people at a time--managing finances, overseeing medical care, providing transportation to
appointments--and advocates on their behalf with their respective care facility, medical and financial community, and,
in some cases, their family. Ann is committed to serving those who can’t take care of themselves and demonstrates
this every day.
Ann takes on leadership roles within the University Centers and for UWSP through her campus involvement,
project management and her mentorship to the students she works with. She attends professional training through
national conferences to maintain the highest level of knowledge in the Event Management System possible (she is the
campus expert in this system). Ann attended the National Women’s Leadership conference co-sponsored by the
Association of College Unions International (ACUI) and the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators.
Further, she has participated in the Regional ACUI Conference and the UW System Union Directors meetings. She
hosts meetings at UWSP for her counterparts from across the UW system and also attends similar meetings at other
campus. Locally, she participated in the Leadership Portage County Program in 2008.
Carolyn Rolfson Sargis said, “It is the behind the scenes people who keep the university running.” No truer
statement could be made about Ann Klosinski and her contributions to the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. Her
day-to-day interactions with students, faculty, staff and community members have served the unit and the university
community positively. Her model professionalism in her working relationships across many constituencies is
exceptional. Finally, her commitment to personal growth and community service makes Ann the finest candidate for
this award.
The recipient of the 2014 University Service Award
is:
Randi Greene
Randi works in the University Child
Learning and Care Center as an Office
Associate. Randi is a current member
of CSC, a member of the Nominations
and Elections Sub-committee for
Faculty Senate and co-chair of the
Student Affairs Communication
Committee. She recently took on the extra role of
supporting the Alliance of Non-traditional Students
(ANTS) organization. She created a survey to find out
what the needs of this student population are and was
able to change the ANTS office computer lab hours to
better accommodate those needs. She is really getting
involved and wanting to make an impact at UWSP.
Classified Employee Recognition
Awards
The Classified Employee Recognition Awards recognize
outstanding contributions of time and effort to an
employee’s department or to the University
community. There are two categories for the
awards: University Service and Outstanding
Work Performance. All permanent, project,
and limited term classified employees are eligible for
these awards. Each recipient will receive $100 and an
award certificate.
The 2014 Recognition Awards Committee included
Cindy Marczak, Business Affairs; Becky Martin, Wisconsin
Center for Environmental Education (Becky has since
moved to the Foundation/University Advancement
office); and Kathy Stedl, Printing and Design. The
committee met to review the paperwork submitted for
several deserving candidates and selected this year’s
winners. The committee is made up of last year’s award
winners.
Outstanding Work Performance Award
The Outstanding Work Performance Award recognizes
performance far beyond what is normally expected of an
employee. It includes taking on additional responsibilities
or increased workload, accepting and completing special
projects that are not part of the employee’s normal work
duties, developing or modifying procedures, or exhibiting
behavior that enhances the employee’s workplace. The
result is improved effectiveness and efficiency of service
offered by the work unit or the University.
University Service Award
The University Service Award recognizes time and
effort voluntarily given to the university community. The
time and effort are considered outside of the normal
work assignment and may include being involved on a
campus committee, providing assistance to staff,
students or a campus organization, etc. The result of this
involvement is increased positive perception of the
University within the community or enhancing the ability
of the University to accomplish its mission of providing
educational opportunities.

The recipients of the 2014 Outstanding Work
Performance Awards are:
Tammi David
Tammi is the Director of Foundation
Operations University Advancement
for UWSP Foundation Inc. Tammi has
over 18 years of dedication to the
UWSP Foundation Inc. She was
instrumental in the recent computer
program upgrade and transition. Her
colleagues say “Tammi is an
outstanding cog in the University Advancement
machinery”. She works well past office hours attending
Board meetings and committee meetings as well as
balancing Foundation financial, program, and scholarship
accounts. Her dedication and enthusiasm insures the
best performance and service for the donors to the
University Foundation.
Mary Jo Oliver
Mary Jo is an Office Operations
Associate in Continuing Education.
Since the retirement of the Financial
Specialist, Mary Jo has taken on
several new duties including
deposits, refunds and reconciling
credit card payments. She assisted
with the move of several Continuing Ed staff to Nelson
Hall at the same time she was learning a new data base
program. She also assisted with staff training of the new
data base for non-credit conferences and programs. Her
willingness to learn new things as well as training others
in a friendly way is very valuable to her department.
Heidi Wallner
Heidi works in the Purchasing
Department as a Purchasing Agent.
The Purchasing Department works
very closely with the Payment Services
Department. The unexpected death
of the Payment Services Manager and
other staff out on medical leave
caused an extreme shortage in this department. Heidi
willingly stepped in to assist their department by
reviewing vendor statements and checking into
discrepancies so that timely payments could be
processed. She is continuously researching more cost
effective and efficient methods of purchase order
distribution to vendors to provide high end service to
faculty, staff and students.
Jackie Durigan
Jackie is the Dean’s assistant for the
College of Professional Studies. Jackie
routinely performs special projects for
the college and their schools. Last
year she created detailed budget
projections to help in planning for a
new Doctor of Physical Therapy,
Doctor of Education and Master of
Business Administration programs.
Her colleagues say “It’s not uncommon to see Jackie
working in her office on a Sunday so that the doors can
be opened efficiently on Monday morning.” Her
dedication and exceptional quality of her work make her
integral to the overall success of the college.
Congratulations to all award recipients on your
well-deserved recognition. Thank you for your
outstanding level of commitment and
performance to the University as well as the
community.
Julie Johnson
Julie works in the University
Advancement/UWSP Foundation
Office as a Financial Specialist 1. Last
year, the Foundation transitioned to a
new system for accepting online gifts
and event registration fees. Julie
developed and modified gift
processing procedures to
accommodate the new system. Additionally, she took
over the management of recurring gifts as they switched
from manual entry to automated batch processing. She
also took on the extra duties of prepping donor and gift
data to import into the database. Her extra efforts
resulted in increased accuracy, greater efficiency and
more timely access to information for staff in addition to
improved customer service for donors to the UWSP
Foundation.
Thank you also to the supervisors and
co-workers who nominated these deserving
employees.
These awards are a great way to let an
outstanding employee know that their work is
greatly appreciated.
Please keep those deserving employees in mind
for next year’s awards!

Parking Changes
Parking permit and meter
prices are increasing; supply
and demand, harsh winters
with excessive snow removal
costs, loss of Lot X meter
revenue, new lot construction
and resurfacing based on stricter DNR standards and
sustainable water runoff requirements, property
acquisitions, debt service, inflation, and low cash reserves
are some of the reasons.

Thank you to Danielle Beschta, Jay Christianson,
Renee Copes, Pat Kleman, Tammy
Larson, Harley Martin, Libby
Raymond, and Paulette Rogers who
have served on CSC over the last two
years. Your dedication, hard work, and
fantastic ideas were greatly appreciated.
And a special thanks to Nanci Simon, Faculty Senate,
who served as a consultant on CSC this last year as we
transitioned from an advisory council to a governance
group. You helped us in countless ways, from Robert’s
Rules, resolutions, elections, and everything in
between. We appreciate all your help so much.
The Council serves on behalf of all UWSP
classified/university staff. CSC/USC promotes active
participation in university decision-making, informed
communication, and a positive professional
environment for all employees. The organization
supports equality, respect and a spirit of collegiality
among all members of the university community,
including students, academic staff, and faculty.
UWSP Parking Services is a self-supporting operation;
outside financial support is not received. Sufficient revenue
must be generated in order to maintain operations and
provide for all parking related services on campus. Revenue
generated from citation payments makes up a portion of
the Parking Services total revenue and is utilized to
maintain the parking system. Purchasing a permit to park
on campus is optional and not required; walking, riding the
bus, biking, street parking, etc., are viable options in lieu of
purchasing a permit.
The yearly parking permit cost will increase by $1.50 per
month over the next two years to $154.00 in the second
year (UWSP currently has the second lowest parking permit
cost in the UW-System; UW-Green Bay has the lowest).
The 2015-16 UWSP yearly permit rate is $136.00
Spring term = $82.00
Summer term = $34.
Faculty/staff will be issued one hangtag (similar to student
hangtags) in lieu of a permit that adheres to a vehicle. One
hangtag per faculty/staff that can be transferred from
vehicle to vehicle, with responsibility for any citations
issued to vehicles displaying the hangtag associated with
the purchasing faculty/staff member.

Common Council
An historical event took place recently! Elections were
held (and appointments made) to fill vacant positions
on the FIRST EVER UW-Stevens Point Common
Council. Beginning with the 2015-16 academic year,
university staff, along with academic staff and faculty,
will have representation on the Common Council. The
Common Council is similar to what used to be Faculty
Senate, but whereas only faculty and academic staff
served on Faculty Senate, university staff will now also
participate in shared governance in the same room, at
the same time, with faculty and academic staff via the
Common Council. Another important distinction
worth noting is that there will be EQUAL
representation of the
different working groups
on campus – 17 university
staff, 17 academic staff,
and 17 faculty.

CSC’s 2014-15
Annual Report
Once again, this year has flown by at lightning
speed! We may have had a list of things we
wanted to accomplish when we began this past
fall, but that changed as the campus grappled with
‘budget discussions’. While UWSP may look
different in the fall, depending on the actual
budget decisions, one of the most notable changes
will be occurring on July 1, 2015. Starting July 1,
2015, we will be University Staff Council (USC).
All of us will be University Staff employees and,
while the name may have changed, you can rest
assured that the volunteers serving on USC will
continue to represent you to the best of their
abilities.
For more information, please go to the CSC website to view
UPS policies already approved:
https://committees.uwsp.edu/csc/SitePages/Home.aspx.
Or, check out the UW System website for operational policy
drafts at:
https://www.wisconsin.edu/personnelsystems/policies/ops/#list
With the implementation of the University
Personnel System on July 1, 2015 and with OSER
no longer in the picture, it has been busy around
here as we work to update campus policies
regarding classified/university staff. Your council
continues to work on reviewing policies and trying
to get an understanding on how these new policies
will affect us in our work life. Everything from
‘shift differentials’ to ‘recruitments’ to ‘grievance’
policies are being reviewed. Thank you to all who
have volunteered to assist on the several work
groups we have formed to make the policy
changes specific to our campus. We appreciate the
assistance from Pam Dollard and the Human
Resources staff in aiding us with this endeavor.
We’re making progress, but we’re not done so
please consider volunteering when the call goes
out.
THANK YOU to all the individuals who accepted
appointments on various ad hoc and search and screen
committees, who volunteered to serve on one or more
UPS Policies workgroups, and who agreed to serve on the
USC and/or Common Council for next year! Your time and
talent in representing university staff is very much
appreciated.
Department of Workforce
Development Information Sessions
Many people had questions regarding unemployment
insurance and other resources that are available to
individuals who may be affected by budget reductions.
In response, the Department of Human Resources and
Affirmative Action brought representatives from the

campus to provide information and answers to general
questions. The information sessions were held April 21,
April 22, and two on May 4.
Another major step for classified/university staff
is the fact that we have shared governance with
Academic Staff and Faculty. The newly formed
Common Council will begin to meet this fall and
we will have plenty of say and plenty to say once
this starts. We’ve worked closely with Professor
Kym Buchanan to ensure we have equal members,
equal say, and equal power within Common
Council. Thank you, Kym, for all of your support
and hard work to make this a reality. This is the
first of its kind in the UW System and we are very
proud of the fact that UWSP recognizes that
united we have a stronger voice and perhaps even
more important is that the voices of all
employees count.
Topics included Job Center and Community Resources,
Unemployment Insurance, and the WIA Dislocated
Worker Program. For more information, you can view

participating at the open forums and attending
meetings.
We would like to thank all of the individuals who
were nominated and those who received classified
staff awards. The winners were presented with
their awards by the chancellor. Unfortunately, due
to the current budget crisis, we were unable to
hold an awards ceremony this year. Perhaps in the
future, we will be able to continue with the awards
ceremony so that the winners can be recognized
by their peers and the entire campus.
Remember to keep an eye on the Message of the
Day (MOD) and your email as we try to keep you
up-to-date on any and all events affecting
University Staff. You can always check out our
website for the most up-to-date information at

In closing, we ask that you continue to help us by
volunteering when needed. We represent all of
you and your input, time and expertise is needed.
