MATH-2210: Calc-III
Text : Calculus with Differential Equations, Ninth Edition, Varberg, Purcell and Rigdon.
Prerequisite: A grade of C or better Math 1220/1250/1270 or AP Calculus BC score of at
least 4. (Practically, if you just got a C, then you are likely struggle in my class !!).

Course Content
The course is divided into four units, which will cover the indicated sections of the text:
Unit 1: 11.1-11.6: 3D-space, vectors, dot/cross product, parametric curves, tangent lines.
Unit 2: 11.7-11.9; 12.1-12.9 & 13.1, 13.2: cylindrical/spherical coordinates, derivates of
multivariate functions, double integrals.
Unit 3: 13.3-13.9, 14.1-14.2: multiple integrals in polar, cylindrical, spherical coordinates,
line integrals.
Unit 4: 14.3, 14.4: independence of path, Green’s theorem.

2.1
Grading policy
Midterm exams
After each of the first three units (outlined above), a take-home midterm exam will be given
on the following dates. The solved exams are to be submitted in my mailbox (JWB-233)
Midterm-1: May-27, 2011 (due May-31, 2011)
Midterm-2: July-1, 2011 (due July-5, 2011)
Midterm-3: July-22, 2011 (due July-26, 2011)
Each midterm will be 15 % of your grade.
NOTE: There will NOT be any make-up exams without a doctors note or an equivalent
well-documented excuse.
2.2
Final exam
There will be a two-hour final exam, starting at 12:30 PM, on Friday, August-5, 2011. The
final examination will be worth 25 % of the total grade.

NOTE: YOU MUST TAKE THE FINAL EXAM OTHERWISE THE GRADE WILL BE
AN E. DO NOT make travel plans for leaving campus before August-6, 2011.
2.3
Homeworks
In between the three Midterm exams, you will get 3 Homeworks each of which will be graded
and count 10% towards your final grade.Suggested problems will be announced in class once
a section of the course material is covered and posted on the class web page. These problems
will ‘NOT’ be collected for grading but will form the basis for test questions, including
slightly modified homework problems.
NOTE: Exam problems will be carefully designed to reward students who regularly do the
suggested problems and the HWs. Not being regular with these can guarantee a bad grade.
2.4
Grades
The grades will be assigned as: A: 90 % and above,
A-: 85-90 %
B+: 80-85 %,
B: 75-80 %,
B-: 70-75 %
C+: 65-70 %,
C: 60-65 %,
C-: 55-60 %
D+: 50-55 %,
D: 45-50 %,
D-: 40-45 %
E: below 40 %
Borderline cases in grades will be decided based on students regular attendance.

3.1
Getting help beyond classroom
Help Center
The Mathematics Tutoring Center (between JWB and LCB, lower level). The hours are 8:00
AM - 8:00 PM from Monday to Thursday and 8:00 AM - 6:00 PM on Friday. The center is
closed on weekends and holidays.
3.2
Office Hours
My office is located in LCB-302 and my office hours are Friday: 2PM-4PM. I will be happy
to assist students with Cal-III problems during these hours. Please try not to call on my
office phone. Email inquiries are welcome as long as they are short !!
