This posting is being used to fill 1 summer Naturalist Corps position. Work hours vary, but will include afternoons/evenings, weekends, and include some holidays. Summer 3.5
month positions are from early to mid-May through Labor Day (flexible, varies according to school year and state park). For more state park information, see DNR website.
Gooseberry Falls State Park is a high-use, fast-paced park. Naturalist Corps may be required to travel to provide programming at Split Rock Lighthouse State Park and other
outreach locations. They will be asked to conduct well established programs, create new programs on subjects relating directly to north shore natural and cultural history. They
must be comfortable working independently and interacting informally with the public for extended periods of time.
Selected applicant will be REQUIRED to attend a 3-day training held May 25th and May 27th, 2016. This statewide naturalist training may be held BEFORE the regular 3.5
month summer position begins depending on start date. Uniforms are provided.
Responsibilities include:
Assist the Park Naturalist in presenting & or leading programs and activities to a variety of audiences ranging from children to adults (about 85% of the job involves public
speaking to large through small groups of visitors). These programs may include nature walks, campfire talks, demonstrations, PowerPoint presentations, outdoor skills
building, and other activities that relate to the park’s natural, cultural, historical & or recreational resources.
Assist the Park Naturalist in conducting roving interpretation in high-use areas of the park. This may include developing a short interpretive talk on one of the natural, cultural or
recreational resources that also features appropriate props or quick hands-on activities for the visitors to do.
Staff the park's visitor center and answer questions received from the public. Read prepared materials and become familiar with the park's points of interest, facilities and trails
in order to provide the public with accurate park information. Keep brochures available for the public and maintain exhibits in a clean and orderly manner.
Assist the Park Naturalist in planning and preparing interpretive signs, audio-visual media, handouts, or other special projects as assigned.
Assist park staff in conducting resource management activities such as invasive species control, plant and animal inventories and research, and seed harvesting.
Special projects and training as assigned. This may include projects that relate to cultural or natural resource research, park operations or regional or statewide interpretive
projects or training activities.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
(Must be a permanent resident of Minnesota.
Must be EITHER in an approved college internship program and have completed one year of post-secondary education (college/tech school, etc.) OR have graduated with a
two or four year degree in a natural resource related field (i.e. biology, botany, fish and wildlife, forestry, Minnesota natural or cultural history, environmental studies, natural
resources management, environmental/outdoor education or related).
Effective verbal/written communications/interpersonal skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
Coursework in public speaking or communications, i.e. interpersonal or mass communication, or persuasion.
Public speaking experience.
Coursework in natural or cultural interpretation or environmental education.
Naturalist Corps experience or other naturalist experience.
