Prairie View A&M University will have a new and
exciting Orientation Program that is mandatory for all
incoming students.
We recommend you keep this brochure for
reference, as it contains information that will
help prepare for your first semester at

Exemptions are as follows:
• ACT-composite score of 23 with a minimum of 19 on both
the Math and English tests; (all criteria must be met)
• SAT-combined scores of 1070 or higher with verbal and
Math scores equal to or greater than 500
• TAKS-a minimum scale score of 2200 on the
Mathematics test, and/or a minimum scale score of
2200 on the English/Language Arts section with a
writing subsection of at least 3.
• Earned at least three semester college credit hours
prior to the 1989 Fall semester
• Military-Honorably discharged members shall be
exempt and active duty shall be waived from TSIA
requirements.
Note: ACT and SAT scores can be no more than five
years old at time of enrollment.
Students who have not met TSIA requirements are required
by Texas law to enroll in an academic skills course and/or
program each semester prior to successfully passing the
TSIA test. The hours for these courses will not count toward
any degree program, but may count toward full-time status.

Texas Success Initiative
Assessment
(Formerly known as THEA)
The Texas Success Initiative Assessment was instituted
by the Texas Legislature to ensure that students enrolled
in a public college or university possess the necessary
academic skills. All undergraduate students must take
the TSIA test prior to enrollment in college-level
courses at Texas public colleges and universities
unless they qualify for a TSIA exemption.

To determine your eligibility to receive financial
assistance, you must submit the Free Application for
Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The FAFSA is available in
both electronic and paper formats. The electronic FAFSA is
a free Internet application located at www.fafsa.ed.gov. The
paper FAFSA is available from your high school counselor
and the Prairie View A&M Office of Student Financial
Services. You must complete the entire FAFSA for
every academic year for which you are applying for
financial aid. This includes ALL need-based grant,
loan, and federal/state work-study funds.

There is no processing fee for this service. The
Office of Student Financial Services must receive
your application from the Federal Central Processor
before ANY aid will be offered. Once Prairie View
A&M University receives your application data, you
will be contacted by mail as to further documentation
requirements. Do not submit additional
documentation until requested.

Residency for
Tuition Determination
Your residency status for tuition purposes is included in
your letter of admission. It is the responsibility of the
student to enroll under the correct residency classification
for tuition purposes. Information concerning residency
can be found in the 2012-13 on-line Prairie View A&M
University Undergraduate Catalog. If you disagree

On-Campus Housing
If you choose to live on campus, it is important that you
complete all housing documents and pay all housing fees
promptly to insure that housing is available upon arrival.
Medical Requirement
All students must provide a copy of their health and
immunization records to Owens Franklin Health Center. A
current tuberculosis skin test (the University will provide
this test for free) and meningitis shot are requirements.

Automatic Unconditional Admission
Graduate in the
top 10% of high school graduating class in Texas in one of the two school years preceding
the academic year for which applicant is applying for admission (TEC 51.803) as determined by high school GPA and
graduate under the Distinguished Level of Achievement Plan.

payment penalties, and if your fees are not paid before
classes begin, your registration may be cancelled. The
actual dates for each installment payment will be shown
on your fee receipt. Please be aware that there are
penalties for late payments, reinstatements,
and improper withdrawals. These dates

Credit by Examination Advanced Placement Testing
Advanced Placement Tests are developed by the College Board and administered nationally at approved test sites where
the Scholastic Aptitude Test is administered. Scores on the national Advanced Placement Test between the levels of 3
and 5 will be acceptable for credit. Letter grade equivalents follow: 3=C, 4=B, and 5=A, Credit for advanced placement is
subject to the total hour limitation of 30 semester credit hours.
College Level Examination Program The CLEP is a national testing program offering the student an opportunity to
earn college credit by examination. The University will accept credit by examination in Accounting, American History,
American Government, Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Economics, English, Business, Foreign Languages, Home
Economics, Mathematics, and Sociology. The acceptance of credit by the University does not assure the application
of this credit to a specific degree or special program. CLEP examination credit will be awarded a letter grade. CLEP
examinations taken at Prairie View A&M University will be counted in the student’s cumulative grade point average (GPA).
