ACADEMICADVISINGASSISTANTSHIP
PURPOSE:ThepurposeofthepositionistoinvolvethegraduatestudentwiththeacademicadvisingprocessintheCollegeof
ScienceandHealth.Theexperienceprovideshandsontraininginthefieldofacademicadvisingandadministrativeprocess.In
addition,theexperienceisdesignedtoacquaintthestudentwiththemanyacademicpoliciesoftheUniversityandprovidean
understandingofhowacademicpolicyisimplemented.StudentspursuingtheStudentAffairsAdministrationgraduateprogramat
UWLwillbegivenpriorityconsideration.
Experiences/Responsibilities: ThisGAlearningexperiencewillfocusonthefollowingACPA/NASPACompetency:
Advising&HelpingRelationships:
HelpingSkills
1) ParticipateintrainingsessionswiththeAssistantstotheDeans,includingsittinginonactualadvisingsituations.She/he
willeventuallyberesponsibleforindividualadvisingoftransferstudents,pre-Pharmacystudents,andotherstudents
enrolledinSAH.
2) AssistwithSAHinvolvementinCampusClose-UpdaysandcoordinationofFreshmenRegistration.
3) Assistwithpre-internandstudentteachingcreditchecksanddevelopacademicstatusreportstothefaculty.

4) LearnaboutadministrativeactivitiesofaDean’sofficesuchascoursesubstitutionsandtransferevaluationsandbea
contactpersonforincomingtransferstudents.
ResourcesandAdvocacy
5) BecomefamiliarwiththeComputerizedDegreeAudit,SAHdegreeoptions(B.A.orB.S.),graduationrequirements,and
SAHacademicprograms,aswellaswithUniversityacademicpoliciesandthestudentrecordssystem(WINGS).
6) Becomefamiliarwiththeuniversitycatalog,especiallyinregardstothevariousmajorsintheCollegeofScienceand
Health,includingprerequisites,courserequirementsandcurriculumplanninginordertoadvisestudentsproperly.The
graduateassistantwillalsobeawalk-inadvisorasneededandwillhelpstudentswithWINGS,courseselectionand
registration,andotherstudentacademicconcerns.
7) Incorporateindividualobjectivesandgoals;weenvisiontailoringtheresponsibilitiesofthegraduateassistanttotheir
particularstrengths,skills,andinterests.Therefore,
a. ThegraduateassistantmayassisttheDean’sOfficewithresearchand/orevaluationrelatingtostudentservices,
includingbutnotlimitedtoliteraturereviews,developmentofevaluationinstruments,andanalysisofdata.
b. Thegraduateassistantmaybecomeinvolvedinthedevelopmentofpromotionalmaterialsandwebsite
information.
Collaborations
8) BeinvolvedinstaffmeetingsandwillparticipateinotheracademicsupportactivitiesintheDean’soffice.
Ethics/Confidentiality
9) Havetheopportunitytolearnabouttheappealsprocessesthatareavailabletostudentsforavarietyofacademic
concerns.He/Shewillbearesourceforprobationaryandineligiblestudents.
TimeCommitment:20hrs/week(regularbusinesshours);Startoneweekbeforecoursesbeginthroughendofsemester.Contact
