Summer 2016
Position Summary
Building services student project crew tasks are assigned and coordinated by the student leader and supervisor. Tasks may
include (but are not limited to) the following: upholstery cutting, sewing, and repair; moving furniture, shampooing carpets,
deep cleaning residence hall areas, installing/removing air conditioners, and cleaning mechanical rooms and equipment.
Some heavy lifting (50 lbs. or less) may be required.
All employees in residential living are expected to help create and promote an awareness of and respect for the university
and residential living, through positive personal interactions with residents, students, staff, and visitors.






The dates of employment are May 23, 2016 through August 31, 2016.
Project crew will be hired for specific positions within building services area of residential living.
Project crew will not hire anyone taking summer classes.
There will be no time off during last three weeks of employment.
No time off should be expected during the month of August.
Must have a minimum GPA of 2.0.
Positions available and work hours
 Work hours are Monday – Friday, 6 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.
 Positions available include project crew managers, carpet crew, project move crew, upholstery crew, building basement
furniture inspection and shampoo crew, smoke detector inspection, cable inspection, Saflok cleaning crew, window
treatment and student room furniture inspection, window cleaning, and project heating crew.
Specific duties
 Participate in training and work during the week following the end of the academic spring semester
 Attend daily meetings with the assigned supervisor and student leader to discuss projects and plan work assignments
 Accomplish daily objectives as directed
 Fill in on other summer conference crews (custodial, conference host) if needed
 Maintain an accurate inventory of supplies and tools used
 Ensure that all safety practices are followed
 Other duties requested by the building services building superintendent or the director of summer conferences
General qualifications and eligibility
As a guideline, you must:
 Be an enrolled student at a UW System school
 Be at least 18 years of age by May 23, 2016
 Be in good conduct standing at UWSP
 Possess good leadership, communication, organizational and time management skills
 Exhibit a solid work ethic and be able to work well with other people
 Demonstrate ability to work independently of a supervisor
 Be available to work from May 23, 2016 through August 31, 2016 (fall 2016 residence hall staff will be released early for
training).
Time off
Each project crew member may be allowed up to 5 days off during the summer, though not necessarily consecutively (in
addition to regularly scheduled days off). Time off must be requested in writing and approved by the supervisor at least
two weeks in advance. Requests for time off may or may not be approved, depending on the project schedule. Specific days
off needed in August must be disclosed prior to signing your employment contract.
Pay rate
You will be notified of your pay scale at a later date. Starting pay for new employees is $8.30 per hour. Additional
compensation may be given based upon longevity for previous residential living summer work experience.
Housing
A free single room with air conditioning is offered to all summer staff while on contract. Living on campus in the summer is
optional for project crew members. If you will be living on campus in the fall, you will be able to stay on campus the entire
summer (while employed). Employees who will be living off campus in the fall will have housing on campus only until
August 17, 2016. Those individuals must make different housing arrangements after that time. Not having a place to live
after August 17 will not be a valid reason to break your employment contract.
Miscellaneous
 The hours per week will vary according to the project schedule. Thirty to forty hours per week is the norm.
 Project crew members must be able to work through the entire contract period.
 Work shirts and nametags are provided and need to be worn while working.
 There are several closed time periods/weekends when project crew members may be required to help out in other
areas, due to the specific needs of these conferences:
o Special Olympics
June 9-11
o Basketball Team
July 15-17
o Suzuki turnover
July 23-24
 If you accept a full time position in residential living, you may not work for another UWSP department concurrently, as
this would put you into overtime pay status.
 You may have other employment outside of UWSP if approved by your supervisor. Hours scheduled for the project crew
position have priority over outside jobs.
 Employees will not be released from their summer employment contract early unless they are fall residence hall staff
who must leave early for training, or as pre-arranged with Tom Garton.
