International Affairs Committee Minutes
September 17, 2015
Present: Nicole Becker, Martha Geaney, Amadou Guisse, Diane King, LiaoLiao Li, Derek Mace, John
Stanley, Tom Stewart, Brandon Conniff (Non-International Student).
Meeting Called to Order at 11:00 am.
Old Business:
1. International Studies Minor Updates Changes were discussed. John Stanley and Derek Mace are on
the International Studies Advisory Committee. They will request approval from each College and
then submit to UCC for final approval. All students will be required to take INT 10 and the capstone.
There are around 100 courses for the minor and some 400 level Education courses will count for it.
Some courses will be archived because they are no longer offered. The goal is to be ready for Fall
2016 and to increase the number of students in the minor with the increased flexibility in course
selection.
New Business:
IAC Mission Statement and Bylaws were handed out. Please review this document and bring back
changes to the next meeting.
1. Committee Chairs for 2015-2016 were discussed. Tom Stewart nominated Nicole Becker. Diane
King seconded the motion.
2. Task Force Chairs for 2015-2016
a. Conferences, Symposia, and Colloquia - Chinese New Year Event was discussed. Liao Liao Li
handled the entire event the past year. Nicole will investigate possible budget monies available
before a chair is selected.
b. Curriculum - John Stanley was nominated; Derek Mace and Tom Stewart seconded the motion.
c. Overseas Task Force – John Stanley nominated Derek Mace. Diane King seconded the motion.
The intended purpose of this task force is to help vet proposed exchange agreements, which are
currently routed to the Provost.
3. Fall 2015 admission and international student numbers were handed out. There are 27 new
international students for fall 2015, which represent undergraduate freshmen, transfer, and
exchange as well as graduate and graduate exchange students. A list of countries and majors
represented was distributed. 8 Exchange students include: 3 Hildesheim, 3 InHolland, and 1
University of So. Denmark. We also have our traditional one-year student from Reutlingen who
attends KU for the first year of postsecondary study. The low number of Chinese students due to the
elimination of the IEP Program was discussed.
4. Fall 2015 study abroad. 6 students outgoing: 3 to Germany, 2 to England, and 1 to Australia.
Nicole will bring the numbers for Summer 2015 to the next meeting. The numbers are growing in
recent years. Spring numbers will be available after Nicole’s pre-departure meeting in midNovember.

b. Approved Programs for Summer 2016 will be announced towards the end of December.
5. National Student Exchange. Over 200 Colleges and Universities in the U.S., Guam, U.S. Virgin Islands,
and Puerto Rico are KU Students to study for up to one year. Some universities are NCATE

6. Scholarships and Fellowships www.kutztown.edu/studyabroad
a. Danzer Scholarship available to 2 students studying business from 5 Berks County Colleges and
Universities for a fall semester exchange to ESB Business School, Reutlingen, Germany. Deadline:

b. PASSHE Study Abroad Award – Deadline October 1 for Winter and November 1 for Spring. Run
through Harrisburg, available to students who receive PHEAA or Pell grants.
C. Fulbright U.S. Student Program: Advisor is Nicole Becker. 1 student applying at this time. An oncampus interview is required for the application. Thomas Stewart and Derek Mace volunteered to
be part of this interview committee. See links on the Study Abroad Scholarship webpage.
7. International Student Organization - ISO is organizing Game and Pizza Night, Camping Trip in
September, Fall Fest in Mid-October, Thanksgiving Dinner on Friday, November 20, and a
Graduation/Going Away party in December for grads and exchange students.
8. Exchange Faculty – Yoko Ishii Nogami in the Anthropology/Sociology Department and Sophia Jung
Park in the Department of Art Education and Crafts will be invited to a future meeting.
