Tips for Troubleshooting Wireless Problems
If you are experiencing problems connecting to Edinboro University's secure wireless network, then check these
troubleshooting tips for possible solutions.
Minimize Interference
Edinboro University's goal is to provide secure and reliable wireless connectivity on its campuses. Wireless
networks are very susceptible to interference. If you are experiencing disruptions in your wireless connection,
then it may be caused by interference. Possible sources of interference include microwave ovens; cordless
phones in the 2.4, 5.0 and 5.8 Ghz frequencies; wireless printers; and un-authorized wireless access
points/wireless routers. Move your device away from these sources and attempt your connection again. If you
are unable to locate the source of interference, then contact Tech Support and provide them with the exact date,
time and location where you experienced connection problems.
Update your wireless credentials
Wireless devices store usernames and passwords for authenticating on Edinboro's wireless networks. These
credentials are stored in the wireless settings. If you are unable to connect to the wireless network, it may be
because you recently changed your password or the stored credentials have become corrupt or were never setup
properly to begin with.
Windows 7 users can use the "Save credentials" button found on the "Advanced settings" page of the wireless
network properties to update their credentials. Other users must update their wireless credentials by deleting the
current wireless network profile/settings and then re-configuring the device using the correct credentials.
Identify preferred networks
The average wireless device can save the settings for many wireless networks. The device will attempt to
connect to each wireless network in the order they are listed. If the University's wireless networks are not listed
at the top, then your device will try to connect to other networks that may be nearby (including ones that are not
even on campus). Use the Up and Down buttons in your devices wireless network settings to move Edinboro's
network to the top.
Disable Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6)
IPv6 is the latest method of addressing devices on the Internet. It uses longer addresses to support a greater
number of devices, but is not widely used on campuses. IPv6 is not supported on Edinboro's network. Disabling
the IPv6 protocol on your wireless device can solve some connectivity problems.
WiFi May Not Always Be Your Best Connectivity Option
All Residence Hall rooms have wired connections available. If you are doing critical work or need reliable
speed and bandwidth at all times please plug in your device if it is ethernet capable. During peak usage hours
the wireless network can become highly congested. Gamers and video streamers should use the wired network
instead. You will have a more consistent experience.
