MetLife Foundation Awards
The MetLife Foundation Community College
Excellence Awards celebrate and highlight the
contributions of community colleges to helping
underserved youth and adults succeed and
advance in college and beyond. The awards
recognize community colleges that, in different
ways and in very different communities, make
significant institutional commitments to helping
first-time college-goers, new immigrants,
working adults, welfare recipients, high school
dropouts, and other populations with limited
college experience and success prepare for
further education or for a family-supporting
career.

Fulbright Scholar Program (U. S.
Department of State, Bureau of
Educational and Cultural Affairs)
The Fulbright Scholar Program’s annual
competition opened on March 1 for lecturing
and research grants in some 140 countries (for
the 2004-2005 program year). Each year 800
American scholars go abroad under the
Fulbright Scholar Program. Faculty and
administrators from two-year, four-year and
graduate institutions are invited to apply.
Traditional Fulbright awards vary from two
months to an academic year or longer. While
foreign language skills are needed in some
countries, most lecturing assignments are in
English. Community college faculty may want
take note of a newer component—the Fulbright
Senior Specialists Program — a short-term
grant program offering two- to six-week grants.
Under the Senior Specialists Program, faculty
may collaborate with counterparts in other
countries on curriculum and faculty
development, assist in institutional planning,
deliver a series of lectures, or provide other
expertise, depending on a host institution’s
interests and needs.
And don’t forget the Occasional Lecturers
Program under the Fulbright Visiting
Scholars Program. The 800 foreign
Fulbright Scholars who come the U.S. each
year offer a rich resource for campuses.
Funds are available for any of visiting
scholars (already in the U.S.) to travel to
campuses for short-term guest lectures. A
directory of visiting scholars currently in the
country is available. All arrangements must
be made at least one month in advance of the
visit.
