BAY AREA THEATRE
Catalog Description:
14 - Bay Area Theatre
May be repeated 1 time
1-3 units
Appreciation of currently available theatre performance by reading, evaluating, and having the option
of attending as many as eight plays concurrently in performance in the area. Credit for more than 1
unit requires completion of special projects. 1 to 3 hours.
Expected Outcomes for Students:
Upon completion of the course, the student should:
1. be able to study and understand the text of a play in preparation for seeing the play actually
performed in a fully staged production;
2. have gained specific knowledge and understanding of theatre organizations on other campuses
as well as professional companies in San Francisco and other Bay Area cities;
3. be able to appreciate the many possible approaches to theatrical production.
Course Content:
1. Plays read will be directly related to the productions scheduled by local theatrical companies.
Every effort will be made to assemble a list of eight productions that would offer a maximum range
of types of drama and types of productions.
2. It is possible that the student experience will include examples from the great historical periods of
the drama as well as contemporary plays, thus including one goal of a basic drama appreciation
course. But specific course content must necessarily depend on the schedules of the local
theaters during the quarter.
3. Where possible, applicable, and practicable, brief backstage tours might follow the performance.
Methods of Presentation:
1. The instructor will introduce each play and playwright briefly, and class time will be spent on
specific analysis of the text, utilizing class discussion methods, in preparation for the production(s)
available.
2. Students are not required to attend the performances.
3. If attendance at the play is elected, the student will provide transportation and admission costs.
(Student rates are usually available.)
4. Alternative projects involve further analysis of other plays by the same playwright, production
designs (scenery, costumes, etc.) of plays.
Methods of Evaluating Student Progress:
1. A thorough review/report of four performances attended (or alternative projects assigned by
instructor) will be required.
2. At quarter's end the four report grades will be averaged with a final project/analysis grade.
