Catalog Description:
50E - Business Email
1 unit
Communication and technology principles for effective use of email in a business environment.
Includes email text and subject line composition and editing, email technology and tools, inbox
management, email etiquette, email as a job search tool, and email security. 1 hour.

Expected Outcomes for Students:
Upon completion of this course, the student should be able to:
1. Determine if email is the appropriate channel of communication for a variety of situations;
2. compose and edit high-quality email content and subject lines;
3. utilize email technology (attachments, signature files, inbox, folders, spam protection, virus and
worm protection, and more) effectively;
4. protect one’s online identity;
5. exhibit proper email etiquette;
6. use email in job searches;
7. conduct further research into advanced email topics, such as return receipts, digital signatures
and certificates, disclaimers, and priority email.

1. Typical Assignments:
a. Compose an email to your supervisor that requests a new desk chair. Attach a file to the
email with a photograph of the chair, its features, and price.
b. Develop a 2-page personal email security plan to ensure your identify is protected, that you
are not a victim of a virus or worm, that you do not spread viruses or worms, and that you
have minimized the amount of spam you receive.
