Special Reports
A. Marquee Sign Design Update
Phil Newsom and Rick Mangum from tBP delivered an update on the new
marquee sign to be erected by the College. The current marquee will be
demolished as part of the new Campus Drive project. They made the following
points:
Location: It was agreed at our previous meting that the best location for the reader
board would be at the corner of Hesperian and Depot. The committee also would
like additional identification signage elsewhere on the campus at entries. Darren
recommended that the city be contacted about the sign. Rick pointed out that we
are not under their jurisdiction.
Orientation: It was agreed at our previous meeting that the board would be
perpendicular to Hesperian and two-sided.
Size: It was agreed that the reader board would be the same width as the existing
sign and accommodate several rows of text. It was confirmed that the existing
sign is 12 foot wide and accommodates one line of text. The tBP sign consultant
recommends a 12’ wide x 3’-10” high, multi-color LED, sign that will accommodate
several lines of text.
Height: It was agreed that the sign would be mounted off the ground for visibility.
Vandalism:It was agreed that the sign design should discourage vandalism and
tagging. tBP suggests landscaping, height and a vine wrapped column as
elements toward this goal.

Project Cost: tBP reported that the current $100,000 budget will just cover the
cost of the reader board, structure and landscape. tBP recommended that
Chabot focus the budget on the marquee sign and address other entry signs at a
later date.
Schedule: Current schedule is to finish design over the summer and get bids in
the Fall.
Design Options: Three design options were presented. The group did not reach a
unanimous decision but most comments favored the single pole design wrapped
in a trellis and covered in vine
