Call to Order
The meeting was called to order at 2:05 p.m. by committee chair Norberto Ruiz.

MSC (Novak/Matthews) that the minutes of November 8, 2005, be approved as
presented.
III.

MSC (Matthews/Novak) to approve the Health/EMT proposal contingent upon
corrections being made as noted in the November 8 minutes and DECSC approval.
IV.
Language Arts Proposal
ESL
Gayle Hunt presented.
ESL 129, Idiom Usage for ESL, 1 unit
New course being converted from an experimental. No suggested changes.
FRENCH
Frederick Hodgson presented.
French 2A, Intermediate French, 4 units
Request to add to Area A.2 on the AA Graduation Requirements page. There was
discussion on whether the course meets the criteria for this area. Frederick called
attention to the typical assignments. Jim Matthews replied that these learning
experiences should also be reflected in Course Content and Expected Outcomes.
Needed:
• Check “Catalog Description Change” and “Below-the-Catalog-Description
Change” on Rationale.
• Remove “or two years of high school French” from both the Abbreviated
Course Description and the Catalog Description.
• Rewrite outline to include Course Content and Expected Outcomes that
address A.2. Bring revised outline to next meeting.
• Add “or most recent edition” to textbook date.

French 2B, Advanced French, 4 units
See discussion under 2A.
Needed:
• Check “Below-the-Catalog-Description Change” on Rationale.
• Rewrite outline to include Course Content and Expected Outcomes that
address A.2. Bring revised outline to next meeting.
• Add “or most recent edition” to textbook date.
AA Degree, French
There was discussion on how many students are likely to want this degree, and how
many degrees have been awarded since it has been offered. It was suggested that
lowering the units might generate more interest. Frederick Hodgson agreed to strike
the 12 units of options and the options list. The revised degree will include only
French 1A, 1B, 2A, and 2B for a total of 18 core units. The revised page will be
inserted in the final packet.
Foreign Language Listings on Graduation Requirements Pages
Marcia Corcoran introduced the subject of inconsistency in the way Foreign
Languages are listed on the Graduation Requirements pages in the Catalog. She
noted that Area C lists both individual languages by name and “Foreign Language;”
Area A (Communications and Analytical Thinking) lists only “Foreign Language.”
She would like to do away with the Foreign Language designation, because there is
no discipline with that title. It was noted that very few students use a foreign
language to satisfy Area A due to the Mathematics Proficiency requirement.
Consensus was that the AA and AS Graduation Requirements pages be revised to list
foreign languages by individual name, rather than under the general category of
“Foreign Language.”
ENGLISH
Clara McLean presented.
English 4, Critical Thinking and Writing About Literature, 3 units
Request to add to Area A.2 on the AA Graduation Requirements page. Clara
reported that the discipline has suggested adding, “investigate the legitimate and
honest use of research;” to Expected Outcomes, to further support the criteria for
Area A.2. The committee agreed to the addition.
Needed:
• add, “investigate the legitimate and honest use of research;” to Expected
Outcomes.
English 7, Critical Thinking and Writing Across Disciplines, 3 units
Request to add to Area A.2 on the AA Graduation Requirements page. No changes
were suggested.

English 115/General Studies 115, Faculty-Student Tutorial: Writing and Reading
Across the Curriculum, .5-3 units.
The division is changing the deadline for students to add to the course and
implementing an automatic drop policy for students who miss appointments. It was
noted that these are scheduling issues and do not need Curriculum Committee
approval.
ISLS
Request to add History 20, The African-American Experience in U.S. History
Through Reconstruction, to the ISLS program. It was noted that the course title
listed on the Dean’s Checklist is not current. Also, no outlines were included.
Presentation of ISLS tabled to next meeting when all materials are available.
Needed:
• Bring old and new course outlines to next meeting.
• Change Philosophy 1 to Philosophy 50 on the program listing.
SPEECH
Marcia Corcoran presented.
Speech 500, Supplemental Instruction in Speech, 0 units
New course. Ron Taylor questioned the degree of importance on the content review
page for Speech 5. Marcia will ask Patti Keeling to review the page.
TUTORING
Ingrid Granados presented.
Tutoring 500, Tutoring in Action, 0 units
New course that would allow the college to document paid and volunteer tutoring.
Recency of the textbook was questioned.
Needed:
• Rewrite Typical Assignments as if the student were being addressed.
• Adjust textbook date if applicable.
Marcia asked whether a student who takes a corequisite course one semester could be
enrolled in just the 500 course the following semester. Consensus was that the
student must be enrolled in both the 500 course and one of its corequisites each
semester. Suggestions included:
• offering a mandatory 4 hour/.25 unit workshop for tutors each semester and
linking it to the 500 course;
• creating series, such as 15A, B, C, D, from the current tutor training courses.
Bill McDonald asked how the tutors interact with instructors in order to be eligible
for the WSCH. They are currently being directly supervised by an instructor.
Brigitte Kouakou asked whether the reason for collecting WSCH is to collect money
to pay the tutors. The money goes to the college, and increasing college revenue will
benefit all programs, including Tutorials.

SERVICE LEARNING (SERV)
Clara McLean presented.
Request to add a new program/catalog heading with the rubric SERV. Clara
explained that she has been training faculty on how to add service learning
components to their courses. Patricia Shannon asked how a faculty member adds
service learning to an existing class. Clara replied that students could be given the
option of replacing an existing component of the course, such as a written final
examination or an essay assignment, with a service learning project.
SERV 85, Learning in Action, 1-3 units
New course. May be taught by faculty members in any discipline. Articulation
Forms #2 and #3 were submitted.
There was discussion on the hours/units ratio. The question of whether a student
could take only the lecture portion of the course and receive one unit was discussed.
Clara stated that she wanted to cover all eventualities, such as a student being unable
to complete the required volunteer hours; the student would still benefit from the
lecture. Ron disagreed with this concept, noting that the volunteer work is built into
the Course Content and Student Outcomes. Clara agreed to revise the course to 2-3
units.
Patricia Shannon initiated a discussion on possible training or approval processes for
instructors teaching the course. Bill suggested that it is the deans’ responsibility to
assign the course appropriately. Ron added that Clara and Susan Gill are
coordinating a Service Learning Task Force that can be looked to for guidance.
Bill asked whether the course might be listed as General Studies. Clara feels it would
be better to list it as Service Learning.
Bill questioned whether CSU would accept this course for Area E on the CSU GE
list. Patricia Shannon suggested working with the Articulation Office to see whether
similar courses have been approved at other colleges. It was agreed to submit the
form and let CSU make the decision.
Jan Novak called attention to the student/instructor meeting information in the
catalog description. She asked that it be rewritten to show that it is class time, not
individual meetings.
Needed:
• Change units from 1-3 to 2-3.
• Revise both Abbreviated Course Outline and Catalog Description to read,
“…Class will meet one hour per week on campus for reflection and
discussion of community issues, and students will serve at least 3 hours per
week…”
V.
Good of the Order
Norberto stated that through a misinterpretation of last year’s calendar, we have no
meeting scheduled for November 29. He stated that the Applied Technology and
Business packet is large, and asked the division’s rep, Jan Novak, whether the packet

could be split and presented on November 29 and December 6. The committee agreed to
meet on November 29.
Clara reported that the DECSC is reviewing paperwork for a new instructor to teach a
section of English 4. When the instructor has been approved, she will report back to the
committee so that the approval can be noted in the minutes.
