Call to Order
The meeting was called to order at 2:10 p.m. by committee chair Patricia Shannon.
II.
Approval of Minutes of October 14, 2008
MSC (Matthews/Pitcher) to accept the minutes of October 14, 2008, as presented.
III.
Applied Technology and Business Presentation
COMPUTER APPLICATION SYSTEMS
Colin Pejman presented.
Computer Application Systems 99.17, Designing for the Market Place I, 3 units
Wayne Pitcher commented that 2 hours lecture and 2 hours laboratory should be 3 units
rather than 2.5.
Jas Bhangal noted that this course is titled "Designing for the Market Place I" and asked
whether there would be a "II." Colin replied in the affirmative.
Needed:
 Correct outline heading to read, "Course Outline for Computer Application
Systems 99.17."
 Change units from 2.5 to 3.
 Change [Typical contact hours: lecture] from 34 to 35.
 Split Course Content into Course Content: Lecture and Course Content:
Laboratory. Add content as appropriate to justify the laboratory hours.
 Add textbook dates.
There was discussion on SLO forms and whether they are needed for this course. It
was decided that SLO forms are not needed for experimental courses because they
are taught only 2-3 times. If an experimental is brought forward as a regular course,
the SLOs can be developed then.
In general, it was decided that SLOs that were not developed on the October 7 flex
day must be brought forward as disciplines present, but packets that were already in
process are in a gray area. Patricia Shannon is meeting with Rebecca Otto on
October 23 and will clarify the process for the current packet. She will send the
division a list of SLOs that have been developed and a timeline for submitting SLOs
that are missing from the packet.
MSC (Matthews/Pitcher) to approve the Computer Application Systems packet with
revisions as noted.

GENERAL STUDIES
Jan Novak presented.
General Studies 1, Introduction to Online Learning, .5 unit
Needed:
 Add "1/2 hour" to the end of the catalog description. Move "[Typical contact
hours…]" to the next line.
MSC (Matthews/Victoria) to approve the General Studies packet with revisions as
noted.
REAL ESTATE
Presented by Tom Clark.
Real Estate 99.02, Mortgage Brokering and Lending, 3 units
Needed:
 Revise Typical Assignments 1.a to read, "Research different types of loans…Of
these types of loan products…"
 Add textbook dates.
MSC (Matthews/Victoria) to approve the Real Estate packet with revisions as noted.
BUSINESS
Patricia Shannon commented that the committee is using a process this year that separates
minor changes from major changes. A number of the Business proposals fall in the
"minor changes" category:
 Business 14, Business Communications, 3 units
 Business 24, Leadership Activity, 1 unit (request to remove from catalog)
 Business 83, Computerized Accounting using Excel and QuickBooks, 2 units
(request to remove from catalog)
 AS Degree, Accounting
 AS Degree, Business
 AS Degree, Business Management
 Certificate of Achievement, Bookkeeping
 Certificate of Achievement, Management
 Certificate of Achievement, Retail Management
 Certificate of Achievement, Small Business Management
If members have editorial suggestions for these proposals, provide the edited pages to
Kaaren Krueg, who will forward them to the proposing faculty.
MSC (Matthews/Pitcher) to accept the above proposals, with editorial changes to be
sent to Kaaren Krueg.
Jas Bhangal distributed a proposal for Certificate of Achievement, Accounting
Technician (new) to be added to the packet.
Also distributed was a request to remove Business 81 from the catalog. Discussion and
review of the rational page for Business 44 (citing a number change and replacing
Business 81) yielded the opinion that the request to delete is unnecessary.

Business 2, Intermediate Accounting, 3 units
Changed prerequisite from Business 1B to Business 1A.
In answer to a question about “working papers,” Dmitriy responded that they are
similar to workbook pages, and students who have taken the prerequisite course will
be familiar with them.
Wayne asked whether course content is extensive enough. Consensus that it is.
No edits were requested.
Business 11, Governmental and Nonprofit Accounting, 3 units
New course. Patricia asked Jane Church why the course is being recommended for
CSU Transfer only. Jane replied that she did not see any other fits. Wanda Wong
added that she found only two other community colleges offering this course. It is
upper division at CSU East Bay.
Needed:
 Correct Course Content #1 to read, “State and Local Government Procedures,
Principles and Standards”
Business 15, Business English, 3 units
Title changed from Business Correspondence. Laboratory hour eliminated.
Jan Novak reported that the content of the course has not changed much. In answer
to the question of teaching the same content without the laboratory hour, faculty
present indicated that it would not be a problem.
No edits were requested.
Business 44, Introduction to Investments, 4 units
Number change from Business 81. Increased from 3 units to 4 units.
Patricia Shannon expressed concern for the change in units, asking how the change
serves our students. Norberto Ruiz replied that by its nature, investment is a
mathematical class. In the past, the mathematical component has not been included
in the course. He is adding it to parallel what is being taught at other colleges.
Discussion on adding a math prerequisite yielded the decision to add “Strongly
recommended: eligibility for Mathematics 65.”
Needed:
 Act on the above suggestion, including producing a content review.
 Add “(May not receive credit if Business 81 has been completed.)” to the
Abbreviated Course Description and Catalog Description just before the hours
notation. [Communicated by Jane after the meeting]
Curriculum Committee
10-21-08, page 4
Business 50C, Interviewing for Success, 1 unit
Business 50D, Resumes and Job Application Letters, 1 unit
Business 50F, Developing a Business Plan, 1 unit
Adding “(May be repeated 3 times)”
Jane discovered that the packet did not include an Articulation page for Business
50D. She created one and sent it to Jas.
Edna Danaher noted that these courses are included in the options lists of many of the
discipline’s degrees and certificates. She asked whether faculty would accept 4 units
of the same course as part of the 6 units of options required. After discussion, faculty
present indicated that they would accept this situation if it arose.
Business 50N, Dealing with Difficult People, 1 unit
This course was recommended by the Accounting and Business Advisory Board.
Needed:
 Move the rationale for the textbook date to the course outline just above Special
Student Materials.
Business 50P, Quality Customer Service, 1 unit
This course was recommended by the Accounting and Business Advisory Board.
No edits were requested.
Business 70, Health Care Financial Management, 3 units
New course to be included in the new Health Care Management certificate. Patricia
asked about the certificate. She wants to be sure that this is not confused with the
Allied Health fields. Jan replied that faculty reviewed the certificate with Dale
Wagoner.
Wayne led a discussion on the Title 5 requirement of placing items, such as field
trips, that might place a burden on students in the catalog description. Jan replied
that as this is going to be an online course, they won’t be holding field trips. She will
delete the reference in Methods of Presentation #4.
Needed:
 Rewrite Methods of Presentation #4 to read, “4. interviews with professionals,
guest speakers.”
Business 71, Health Care Law, 3 units
New course to be included in the new Health Care Management certificate.
Needed:
 Revise Abbreviated Course Description and Catalog Description as follows,
“…including HIPAA (patient privacy laws and regulations), Medicare and
Medicaid…”
Business 72, Leadership of Health Care Organizations, 3 units
New course to be included in the new Health Care Management certificate.
Curriculum Committee
10-21-08, page 5
There was lengthy discussion on the feasibility of students’ being able to complete
Typical Assignment #1 based on increased security at many hospitals.
Needed:
 Replace “…plant, and guest services…” with “…facilities, and guest services…”
in the Abbreviated Course Description and Catalog Description.
Business 88, Introduction to Project Management, 3 units
New course.
Needed:
 Add “[Typical contact hours: 52.5] to the end of the Catalog Description.
Business 92, Excel Spreadsheets for Accounting, 2 units
Business 93, QuickBooks, 2 units
Needed:
 (both courses) Separate Course Content into “Lecture” and “Laboratory”
sections.
Certificate of Achievement, Business—Transfer (New)
Certificate of Achievement, Health Care Management (New)
Certificate of Achievement, Human Resources Assistant (New)
No edits were requested.
Patricia reported that there has been a new dialogue with the Chancellor and LPC. Next
year the two colleges will be required to have dialogue even though they do not share a
rubric, the intent being to determine comparability of courses. Dmitriy commented that
there is competition between the colleges for students. Jane stated that that is Enrollment
Management, not Curriculum.
MSC (Pitcher/Matthews) to accept the Business packet with recommended changes.
V.
Good of the Order
Jane explained problems she is having because courses in suspended disciplines are not
published in the catalog but do appear on ASSIST and the counseling division’s fliers.
She needs direction on how to resolve the problem.
