1.
Call to Order
The meeting was called to order at 2:10 p.m. by committee chair Wayne Pitcher.
[NOTE: Good of the Order was spread throughout the meeting to accommodate the
schedules of those presenting. I have grouped all discussions at the end to facilitate
future reference to the minutes. kk]
2.
Minutes of September 21, 2010
Wayne suggested a clarification to the minutes. In the third paragraph of 5. Good of the
Order, he suggested modifying the first sentence to read, “Jane has noticed that there is
no consistency within disciplines on how classes are graded (grade only; grade or P/NP;
P/NP only), and suggested…”
MSC (Cirera-Perez/Buti) to approve the minutes of September 21, 2010, with the
suggested modification.
3.
Approval of Certificate of Achievement, Architecture Technology
Wayne explained that the certificate was approved late in the Fall semester, pending
changes and an email vote. He has evidence of the changes, but not of the vote. He added
that he thought the AA/AS degrees were also different in the catalog from what was
presented. On further reflection, it was decided that the AA/AS degrees are probably
correct in the catalog (Wayne will check with Adrian Huang to be sure) but that the
certificate needs official approval.
MSC (Warda/Buti) to accept the Certificate of Achievement, Architecture Technology,
as presented. Edna noted that it needs State approval before it can be inserted in the
Addendum.
4.
Science/Math Presentation
DELETIONS
Mathematics 35, Statistics for Business Majors, 4 units
Mathematics 35W, Statistics for Business Majors Workshop, ¼ - ½ unit
Needed:
•
Mathematics 35 appears on the Business Administration AA Degree. Be
sure to let the Applied Technology and Business Division know of the
change so they can revise their program page.

MINOR CHANGES (Consent or FYI changes)
BIOLOGY
Biology 2, Principles of Cell/Molecular Biology and Genetics, 5 units
Biology 4, Principles of Animal Biology and Evolution, 4 units
Biology 6, Principles of Plant Biology and Ecology, 4 units
Laboratory manuals have been added to the Textbook List.
COMPUTER SCIENCE
AA Degree. Computer Science (General)
AS Degree, Computer Science (General)
Revised due to previous removal from the Catalog of Computer Science 44A and
91.
MAJOR CHANGES
COMPUTER SCIENCE
Computer Science 14, Introduction to Structured Programming in C++, 4 units
Adding a prerequisite of Mathematics 54 or 55 or equivalent
Computer Science 15, Object-Oriented Programming Methods in C++, 4 units
Due to the prerequisite being added to Computer Science 14, the advisory of
Mathematics 20 is being removed.
As required by Title 5, institutional research has been conducted and the results are
included in the packet.
MSC (Buti/Ogman) to approve changes to the prerequisites of Mathematics 14
and 15.
ENGINEERING
Bruce Mayer presented.
Engineering 43, Electrical Circuits and Devices, 4 units; title being changed
from Engineering Circuit Analysis.
The course has been revised to allow articulation with UC Berkeley. Bruce
explained that the difference in the old and proposed new course is one of depth
vs. breadth. He has dropped one topic and added several. The new version
covers 90% of the material in the old outline. He has discussed the changes with
UC Berkeley but not San Jose State University. However, a colleague at Santa
Rosa Junior College has made similar changes and has had no problems with
articulation. Bruce has also discussed the changes with Scott Hildreth and Keith
Level (LPC), neither of whom had objections.
Patricia Shannon asked whether listing specific software, such as SPICE and
MATLAB might limit the longevity of the course outline. Bruce stated that in
his opinion these programs will still be viable during the lifespan of the current
version of the outline.
AS Degree, Engineering
Request to add a residency requirement to the AS Degree, i.e., in order to be
awarded an Engineering degree, the student must have completed the following
calculus-based engineering courses (Engineering 25, 36, 43, and 45).
Discussion yielded the fact that this course does not qualify for the
Curriculum Committee
9-28-10, Page 3
“Occupational/Technical” restrictions included in the statement on page 15 of
the Catalog.
The instructor would also like to add Engineering 11 to the list of degree
options.
There was discussion on the semester designations listed in parentheses and
what the meaning was. Consensus was that if they remain on the degree page,
there must be an explanation. Bruce agreed to remove those notations.
MSC (Shannon/Buti) to accept the Engineering presentation as modified.
(Modifications included correction of typos and removal of the parenthetical
semester notations on the degree page.)
MATHEMATICS
Anita Wah presented.
Mathematics 65A, Elementary Algebra A, 3 units
Mathematics 65B, Elementary Algebra B, 3 units
Anita explained that topics in the two courses have been rearranged to group
linear equations in two variables and system of equations in the first course and
polynomial and rational expressions and equations in the second, thus
streamlining the flow of material. She believes that the current structure was
textbook driven.
MSC (Cirera-Perez/Victoria) to accept the changes to Mathematics 65A and
65B as presented.
MICROBIOLOGY
Carlos Enriquez presented.
Microbiology 1, Microbiology, 5 units
Minor changes to catalog description and a more detailed description of the
assessment of the lecture and laboratory components. It was originally thought
that because this outline is not word-for-word the same as LPC’s, that we would
have to change our rubric. The Biology subdivision has met with both LPC and
Chabot’s Dean of Science/Math. Consensus is that the basic course content is
the same.
In answer to a question of whether LPC has also removed parasites from their
course description, Carlos replied that he didn’t know, but that they are not on
the list of recommended topics published by the American Society of
Microbiology.
MSC (Cirera-Perez/Wu) to approve the course as presented.
5.
Good of the Order
•
At the last meeting, Wayne promised to look up two questions:
Textbooks—what does it say in best practices
Curriculum Committee
9-28-10, Page 4
Wayne distributed excerpts from “The Course Outline of Record: A Curriculum
Reference Guide.” It appears from the language in the document that courses
listed on the Course Outline of Record are “required.” After discussion, Wayne
stated that he is not inclined to make changes to our “Textbook(s) (Typical)” at
this time. Consensus was to support that view.
Guidelines on which courses should be grade only; grade or P/NP; P/NP only.
Wayne did not find anything on this subject but will keep looking.
•
Kaaren reported that the first group of new courses she submitted to the state via
their new CurricUNET program have been accepted and are now on the Credit
Inventory.
•
Wayne has spoken with Kathy Kelley regarding finding a new chair to take over the
committee in Spring. The release time is 3 CAH per semester, and the chair must be
a faculty member. Kathy noted that the chair will be a member of the newly formed
Planning, Review and Budget Council (PRBC). She added that the Curriculum
Committee chooses their chair, and the Senate ratifies the choice.
Patricia Shannon asked whether an announcement has gone out to the campus as a
whole. Wayne will send one.
There was discussion on the learning curve that is required for the chair.
5.
The meeting was adjourned at 3:45 p.m.
