1
Studying habits Sleeping eight hours before an exam. Take breaks while doing math homework to really absorb the
5/30/2014 1:45 AM
material.
2
Skill of Understanding. First it is important to listen and observe where your tutee is having troble with. In math, there
5/30/2014 12:48 AM
are several ways a student can be confused at a problem. when you do not pay much attention, even if you explain
the solution, if it is not specifically toward their confusion then it confuses the student even more. So attentive listening
and asking questions on exactly which step they are confused on is important. But going over the whole entire
problem together is good too, as long as you know what they need help on.
3
How to organize a speech and to prepare for a presentation.
5/28/2014 5:43 PM
4
How to prepare for a presentation. I would say to the student to finish the outline then pratice the speech as much
5/28/2014 5:37 PM
times they can until they get comfortable.
5
Since I am a Learning Assistance, I don't really sit down with students and have a one-on-one type of conversations. It
5/28/2014 3:31 PM
is usually when the students within the class have a question and then I answer whatever question(s) they have.
6
Anxiety being the biggest problem, a new skill that I recommended was starting out with the basic ideas to jot down for
5/21/2014 9:24 PM
the outline when not mowing when to start and then when the ideas were all down then start arranging them I'm
whichever made the best sense to the student. I also thought that knowing your audience and then connecting the
speech to that audience would be a great skill to keep in whenever picking a topic.
7
the structure of outlines for presuasive speeches, informative speeches, and speeches for entertainment..
5/21/2014 3:51 PM
8
Delivery: For techniques, we work in front of a mirror and also talk about how to record yourself and memorize.
5/20/2014 1:40 PM
9
Structuring a speech to have all the necessary components- To teach this skill to the student I usually provide outlines
5/20/2014 1:04 PM
and review step by step the outline. From there I usually look over an example with the student until they feel they
understand what it is that they need to do.
10
How to start an introduction for a speech. The first best technique, which should be mandatory when applicable, is to
5/20/2014 2:39 AM
go by the handout assigned by the teacher. The next is to pretend talking to a friend, to illustrate that it's not as
complicated as it looks on paper. "hey i got a new hair do. I have't cut my hair in years. I'll show you before and after
pictures. I hate my new do. First I am going to show you the pictures then i'll tell you why i hate it." Of course go over
the meaning of each part of an introduction, as it could be valuable to future speeches beyond the classroom, but
yeah. Also, concept mapping, which is kind of rare.
11
I'm not quite sure how to answer this question? What does it mean by "new skill"? In my subject? In tutoring?
5/19/2014 10:34 PM
12
Outlining. I like to try to use images as well as verbal descriptions along with appeals to personal interests in the
5/19/2014 10:05 PM
subject.
13
outlining, brainstorming, formatting, attention getters, thesis, introduction, body, conclusion, layout, delivery, practice,
5/19/2014 9:21 PM
eye contact
14
A skill I typically teach a student is to prepare beforehand for class in order to benefit most from lecture. The most
5/19/2014 5:12 PM
important technique to prepare for class is to read the corresponding chapters in their books. That way they'll have
some background information on the subject. Preparing also means understand previous material. A way to do this is
by reading previous notes, chapters in the book and previous homework/tests.
15
Repeat / remember
5/19/2014 1:58 AM
16
The first skill I teach students is to use the course materials to overcome difficulties. Through techniques such as
5/19/2014 12:06 AM
reading, writing, speaking, listening and using examples in the material as references.
17
Every time an student is introduced to a new chapter I teach them how to master it. The first skill is to read and
summarize the chapter before lecture, then along with the lecture notes include a work sample that includes all the
matematical skill and his/hers own conclusion.

I teach my students how to write a paper and describe the grammar rules. I use visual elements a lot. Every student is
5/16/2014 3:50 PM
different and needs different methods of explanation. Also language choice depends on a student.
21
I would teach my students on how to understand the "English" part of computer science. For instance, I would help
5/16/2014 3:50 PM
them in terms of how to plan out/design their code by letting them write out their code on a piece of paper first. I would
also tell them to keep note on key words in a problem that would hint on using certain built-in functions. Thirdly, I would
teach them specific definitions that would help in understanding functions in computer science.
22
Pay more attention to the pictures because physiology could be very heavy in text. Use youtube video to make
5/16/2014 3:50 PM
subject more interesting and helpful.
23
I typically teach them to use what works best for them, studenting skill, if color helps them identify a difference in two
5/16/2014 3:49 PM
concepts then go for it. Pictures, underlining, ect.
24
i help students understand grammar mistakes and how to fix it for themselves. i read through the first paragraph of the
5/16/2014 3:44 PM
essay with them. as i go through it if i find something that is incorrect, i ask them if they can identify something in that
sentence that doesnt make sense. i have them read it aloud. some students catch it and some need more help, in
such cases i point out the mistake and ask again if they know how to fix it. if not i walk through different options with
them and let them pick which one they think is the most correct. if they still cant figure it out then i show them what is
the correct answer and explain why so they can catch it next time.
25
I always make up some similar problems for my students to practice; therefore, students may get use to do the
5/16/2014 3:40 PM
problem; and also more confident to finish the work.
26
Draw a picture make a diagram provide an example ask leading questions use a metaphor make suggestion
5/16/2014 3:39 PM
27
Finding out what the problem is asking. - I highlighted keywords in the question that would point to what is being
5/16/2014 3:35 PM
asked. - I showed other problems with similar wording to them that way they can try finding out for themselves.
28
A skill I teach students is how to memorize a certain formula. Besides practicing and using the formula repeatedly, I
5/16/2014 3:34 PM
teach them how to understand the formula alone. They will learn what the formula is finding and where it comes from.
That is the best way to memorize a formula.
29
Learning to manage time and doing homework at a steady pace, not doing it at the last minute.
5/13/2014 5:57 PM
30
the use of logical maps the use of concept maps the use of recorder to record lectures the use of flash cards the us of
5/13/2014 5:51 PM
visual aids to help the visual learners.
31
Flash cards, re-writing notes, identifying key terms, quizzing others, drawing and labeling structures/concepts, etc.
5/13/2014 5:48 PM
32
One thing I have helped with was how to multiply and simplify fractions. I would help them understand how to simplify
5/13/2014 5:47 PM
the equation then solve it, and the other way around. I would explain factors and how to find them through hints the
numbers give (ex. If the number is even, 2 is a factor.) I also use pictures to help show how the simplified fractions is
the same as the original.
33
A new skill that I commonly teach students is how to most effectively utilize the text book. I first remind students to
5/13/2014 5:47 PM
familiarize themselves with the text book, identifying (and preferably marking with a tab or post-it) the Table of
Contents, the Glossary, and the Index. Next, I encourage students to identify and tag each chapter. Next, I show
students how to look for major concepts within each chapter and encourage the student to tag those as well. For
Spanish, this is particularly helpful because it provides students with a manageable workload. Most students attempt to
read the book and retain every piece of information and vocabulary and become overwhelmed with the class and the
material, whereas using the book in an effective manner can grant the student with a feasible study plan.
34
Visual: Use pictures and figures to go a step by step approach. Also flow diagrams would be a good way to teach
5/13/2014 5:45 PM
visually.
35
How to use the computer. Demonstration, having them do it in front of me. Having them do their online work at home
5/13/2014 5:43 PM
and then show me.
36
In my case as an ESL tutor I try to make them feel comfortable so they are able to trust me and I'm able to help them.
5/13/2014 5:43 PM
37
Better patience
5/13/2014 5:42 PM
38
I typically teach students structure and note taking. I show them how to efficiently structure their essays for English as
5/13/2014 5:42 PM
well as understanding their prompt better. I also taught my geography students how to study for tests, as well as how
to interpret the text that they were given to read.

When I teach factoring in the math lab, I liken it to taxes. You want to get as many factors out of the expression
5/13/2014 5:42 PM
without taking away too much. Like taxes, take as much as you can from all variables without taking too much. (It
makes more sense in person)
40
I usually try to teach my students how to use the books and some of my personal tips on how I learn. I usually tell
5/13/2014 5:41 PM
them things like using the headings and the colors of the headings to organize the information and to ease the finding
of information. I also tell them things like looking out for the bold words and how to break down the sentences that
contain a lot of information in order to figure out what it is trying to say.
41
Thinking by themselves.
5/13/2014 5:41 PM
42
Solving for a lot of kinds of equation
5/13/2014 5:40 PM
43
To read the textbook beforehand and to underline questions they do not understand. Also, to make sure that while
5/13/2014 5:40 PM
they read the word problems to underline the key phrases to help them understand the problem better.
44
study with the tutee and try to solve problems with tutee together
5/13/2014 5:40 PM
45
Learn by doing and mind connected to hand. Refer to Mr. Bruce Mayer's ppt: How to Study like a College Student.
5/13/2014 5:40 PM

46
I was able to impart my own individual study ethic by describing how I prioritized my studying. I gave an example of a
5/13/2014 5:40 PM
template of my weekly studying calendar.
47
Identify the learning skills that students have so that I can provide more sufficient ways for them to learn and help them
improved more efficiently.
5/13/2014 5:40 PM
48
To plan a homework schedule ahead. Recall your job/church/school schedule and declare a weekly set study time per
5/13/2014 5:40 PM
subject,etc.
49
I teach students how to use flash cards to help them memorize important vocabulary. The subject I was tutoring them
in has a lot of new words that may be difficult to remember, and the act of making flash cards makes the student more
5/13/2014 5:39 PM
involved than just writing notes.
50
Making flashcards/ buying flashcards to learn their multiplications. I always say it will be a tedious process but it will be
5/13/2014 5:39 PM
well worth it at the end. I also taught them tricks when learning their multiplications.
51
I tell students to use different resources, especially french, I tell them to watch videos in french, listen to music, read
french childrens book. Just use as many different resources as possible. For political science I use stories from the
5/13/2014 5:39 PM
news or literature to try and explain key concepts dealing with Government.
