Why additional Chemistry Faculty?
• “One of the things that I’ve been focused on as President is
how we create an all-hands-on-deck approach to science,
technology, engineering, and math… We need to make this
a priority…to make sure that all of us as a country are
lifting up these subjects for the respect that they deserve.”
-President Barack Obama
• “Full-time, permanent faculty should be sufficient in
number to teach the full range of courses on a regular
basis, with the number of credit hours taught by
permanent faculty exceeding 75% of the total chemistry
offerings.”
-American Chemical Society Guidelines for
Chemistry in Two-Year College Programs
Chemistry at Chabot currently:
• Offers courses taken by students in many different STEM
majors, from chemistry to biology to engineering, as well
as pre-professional majors such as pre-medical and prepharmacy.
• Has experienced increased demand for classes.
• Has between 50% and 65% of FTEF taught by full-time
faculty (well below the ACS guidelines).
• Has experienced reduction in full-time faculty teaching
loads due to other administrative responsibilities.
