Women at War – Women’s Land Army
Tasks
1. Many women in the Land Army were employed in milking cows on the
farms. See if you can find out how milking was done in 1939-1945.
Make a list of the tasks that had to be done to milk a cow properly.
2. Imagine that you have been asked to produce a short film about the
Women’s Land Army for the government. The film will be used to
persuade more women to join the Land Army, and will be shown in
cinemas. What would you put in the film? What music would you use
for the film? What would the commentary be like? Would you use
sound effects? Would you show only the glamorous work, like driving a
tractor on a sunny day? Or would you also show some of the dirty,
muddy work like weeding or picking cabbages? Who would you use to
speak in the film – a man? A woman from the Land Army? A farmer?
Or more than one person?
Write a brief description of the contents that you would use, and
describe why you would make the film in this way.
