MATH 5750/6880: Wavelets and Applications
Project Proposal
You must submit a project proposal for my approval no later than 5pm
on February 27, 2009. This semi-formal proposal should describe each of the
following:
• Specific Topic
• Proposed source of relevant information
• Reasoning for choosing topic
• Presentation format of project
The project is due no later than 5pm on April 30, 2009. The project is worth
20% of your final grade.
The format of the project can range from a 5-7 page expository paper on
your choice of topic not covered in class to an implementation of some sparse
approximation algorithm. In the case of an implementation project, in addition
to submitting your code/software you should submit a 3-5 page report on the
theory behind the implementation and a user’s guide for your software. Other
formats you develop may also be accepted.
A very good source of information on topics not covered in the course is the
text. While you will be required to use an additional source, you may certainly
use the text to develop your understanding of the subject and as a primary
reference. Students registered for MATH 6880 should use more technical, journal
articles (although survey articles are encouraged). To assist you in choosing a
topic, below is a list of sections I plan to cover (at least partially) in class. I
already covered Chapters 2 and 3 and Sections 4.1-4.3.
• 6.1, 6.2
• 7.1, 7.2, 7.3, 7.7
• 9.3
• 10.1, 10.4, 10.5
• 11.1, 11.3 (these will presented in the optional make up classes)
• Compressed Sensing: 12.1, 12.3, 12.4, 13.4 (I will not be following the
text, but these sections cover the topics I plan to present)
