625. COACHING AND MENTORING IN BUSINESS (3). Identifying, understanding, and
developing the skills needed to develop and change others through effective coaching and
mentoring and thereby enhancing one’s own leadership in the process. Topics include
developmental coaching and mentoring, the basics of feedback and other concepts that influence
the development of effective coaching and mentoring abilities. CRQ: MGMT 615. PRQ: MGMT
635.
Rationale: The course will provide business students with the skills needed to develop as managers and leaders and
change others through effective coaching and mentoring of team members and employees, enhancing their own
leadership in the process. With an in-depth understanding of fundamental coaching and mentoring concepts and
strategies and tools, students will be able to help future employees develop new capabilities, build employees’ skills
to solve problems, and develop leadership abilities.
Non-duplication issue: A meeting took place with the Department of Counseling, Adult and Higher
Education. Changes were made to the new course proposals to address concerns raised in that meeting.
The Department of CAHE raised no duplication concerns about the revised proposals.

655. CHANGE MANAGEMENT (3). Study of approaches and responses to various levels of
change, diagnostic tools, intervention strategies, and individual and organizational factors that
create support for or resistance to change. Application of diagnostic tools and development of
customized plan for an organization. PRQ: MGMT 635
Rationale: Change Management is a topic of increasing importance to business and NIU MBA students.
Organizations are calling on managers throughout the organization to drive changes in the organization. This
course will prepare students for these challenges in their professional life.
