REQUEST FOR APPROVAL OF A SUBDIVISION OF A MAJOR/OTHER
[Undergraduate Emphasis or Minor or Graduate Specialization or Concentration]
1.
Responsible department or administrative unit: Management
2.
Name of degree program (if applicable): NA
3.
Proposed title of subdivision: Business Innovation and Entrepreneurship
4.
CIP classification (if applicable):
5.
Date of implementation: Fall 2010
6.
Description of proposed offering: series of courses available to any NIU undergraduate
student in good standing
7.
Rationale for proposal:
Enrollments in entrepreneurship offerings have risen steadily throughout the U.S. and
among NIU undergraduate business students since 2004.
Over 40 percent of all new NIU freshmen have reported plans to launch a business during
their careers. (See attached from Freshman Survey, Office of Institutional Research.)

perspectives, and improve career preparation for all participating students
9.
Expected curricular changes including new courses: two (2) new courses added, and
revisions to two (2) existing courses
10.
Expected enrollments within first three years of implementation: year 1, 30; year 2, 50;
year 3, 60
11.
Expected methods for course delivery: face-to-face
12.
Anticipated staffing needs: year 1, none; year 2, one (1) instructor; year 3, one (1) faculty
member and one (1) instructor
13.
Anticipated funding needs and source of funds: year 1, existing instructor and faculty
member’s time will be reallocated and existing/increased donor contributions will
provide support; year 2, existing instructor and faculty member’s time will remain
reallocated and grant(s) will fund a new instructor, and increased donor contributions will
provide support; year 3, existing instructor and faculty member’s time will remain
reallocated, grant(s) will continue to fund the new-in-year-2 instructor, a previouslyapproved faculty line will support a new faculty member, and increased donor
contributions will provide support.
14.
If the subdivision is an emphasis or specialization, the IBHE expects that it will have a
core of courses in common with existing subdivisions with the major. Complete the
correct attached chart depending on if the major has existing subdivisions or if this will
be the first subdivision of the existing major. NA
