Department of Accountancy Retention Policy
Any student admitted to NIU can declare accountancy as a major. However, all students must meet the College of
Business and Department of Accountancy retention requirements before enrolling in upper-level courses. In order to
enroll in any 300- or 400-level accountancy course, students must meet criteria option 1 OR option 2.
Criteria Option 1:
1. Meet the requirements to enroll in UBUS 310*; and
2. Earn a 3.00/4.00 minimum cumulative GPA at all colleges/universities attended and
3. Earn a minimum grade of B in ACCY 206, Introductory Financial Accounting, and in ACCY 207, Introductory
Cost Management, or the equivalent courses
Students who meet Criteria Option 1 must formally request a review of their transcript by submitting a
completed Department of Accountancy Transcript Review Request (TRR) Form to the Department of
Accountancy. (This form is separate from the NIU Admission form and the College of Business Transcript Review
Form for UBUS 310.)
Criteria Option 2:
1. Meet the requirements to enroll in UBUS 310*; and
2. Pass the Accountancy Qualifying Examination (AQE)
Students who do not have a B or higher in ACCY 206 and ACCY 207 and/or do not meet the cumulative GPA
requirement must successfully complete the AQE to be retained as accountancy majors at NIU. The AQE is a
comprehensive, multiple-choice test of information covered in most introductory financial and managerial
accounting textbooks. The 30 financial and 30 managerial questions are divided between computation and theory
questions.
To be eligible to take the AQE, you must have completed the requirements to enroll in UBUS 310*, or you must
currently have any uncompleted requirements in progress. For more information, please visit http://go.niu.edu/AQE.
*Requirements to enroll in UBUS 310:
 Complete the following courses with a C or better: ACCY 206, ACCY 207, MGMT 217, UBUS 223, OMIS 259, ECON
260, ECON 261, MATH 211 or MATH 229, PSYC 102, and ENGL 203 or ENGL 204 or equivalent courses; and
 Complete the Career Compass program (UBUS 100; Optional for transfer students with 45 or more credit
hours); and
 Complete 60 semester hours (Junior standing); and
 Obtain a 2.75 cumulative GPA (NIU and Transfer GPA) ; and
 Complete or enroll in Passport Introduction (UBUS 200; To be taken before or concurrently with UBUS 310)
