College of Education and Human Services
Counseling, Administration, Supervision and Adult Learning
Dr. George Amolsch (pronounced A as in Asia, mulsh),
Currently an adjunct professor in both the Adult Learning and
Development and Management Labor Relations Department
While working full-time in the domestic auto industry Dr. Amolsch
received his Associate’s Degree in General Studies from Lorain County
Community College, his Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science, and his
Master’s Degree in Labor Relations and Human Resources from
Cleveland State University. He received his Doctoral Degree in
Leadership and Lifelong Learning from Cleveland State in 2008.
Dr. Amolsch retired from the auto industry in 2006 after over 30 years of service. He spent 15 years
working on the assembly lines in various sections of the Avon Lake Ford plant. He spent one 3 year term
as an elected union official. His last 16 years were spent as the United Autoworkers Training
Coordinator sharing the responsibilities of training the work force of over 2000 unionized hourly and 250
salary (non-union) employees at the facility with a salary counterpart. The facility had 1 local union but
2 different union bargaining units. One consisted of a traditional contract agreement, over 100 hourly
job classifications and strict lines of demarcation for the trades, while the other was a Team Concept
unit consisting of 2 hourly classifications and lax trade demarcations.
This facility was the first Ford Motor assembly plant to institute lean manufacturing production
processes to the work force. Lean production is a flexible system that presumes a competitive edge
cannot be gained by treating workers like machines. The intent of the system is to stimulate the work
force by training them in techniques that develop their individual talents to their maximum capabilities
while providing them not only the opportunity to function autonomously in the operational processes
but also affording them an avenue for improving upon these processes.
