Potential Opportunities in Zone 14
• Species with the most commercial value are:

–
Cod
Mussels
Clams
Salmon
Steelhead trout
• Salmon and Steelhead trout aquaculture have not
prospered in our coastal waters because of “winter chill”
(temperatures less than -0.7 degrees Celsius), and,
potential ice damage to net pins.

KEDC’s Position
• KEDC remains highly interested in the cod fishery
– Awaiting for a source of juvenile cod to be identified
• If the fishery becomes commercial again, and juvenile cod
•
can be obtained, KEDC can become very active in involving
additional aqua culturists into the industry
In 2000, KEDC, in conjunction with the Fisheries Union, put
off an educational workshop that trained farmers in cod
aquaculture
– Funded by Post Tags money
• KEDC will support opportunities in the aquaculture industry
for potential aqua culturists within our zone.
