SMOV Status & Planning Meeting Notes
5/31/09
Minutes provided by Burley (richard.j.burley@nasa.gov), Biagetti (biagetti@stsci.edu, and others
as indicated.

Summary:
Observatory and instruments continue to perform nominally and according
to plan. The first visit of the COS NUV high-voltage ramp-up has been accomplished. The
SBC has performed the first ACS external observation, a UV-comtamination check, which
looked nominal. The ACS Optimization Campaign analysis continues with nominal results.
Other systems and operations are nominal.

EPS performance continues to be nominal.
The load is centered around 73A
The system SOC is slowly continuing to increase and reached 508.5Ah in the
last 24 hours.
The battery temperatures remain low ranging between -4 and -1.0 deg C with
excursions to just below 0 deg C when the redundant heater cycles on (once
every 24 hour period). SRodgers
See STIS HSTAR.

Science
• Nothing to add.
FGS/OTA
 Engineering (ABradley)
• All hardware nominal, there are no new HSTARs.
• There were 5 GSACQs (Guide star pairs) and 3 GSACQs (single
guider) spanning the previous 24 hours, all were successful.
• FGS 1 was used in Astrometry mode to TRANS Mode scan each of
the 3 AMA target stars.
• My compliments to Larry Stake/SS for dumping the ETR early.
 Forward Plan
• 9 GSACQs (Guide star pairs) are planned over the next 24 hours
and 7 sets of TRANS Mode scans with FGS 2 are planned over the
next 24 hours.
• All 3 AMA targets observed in Clear and Pupil filters, and at 3
positions.

Engineering
Status
• NUV detector turn on visit 1 nominal.
• All agree to proceed to step 2.
• Discussion about
o small pressure blip yesterday
 see attached ppt COS Engineering Trends, CLong)
o turn-off time for Ion gauge.
Forward Plan
• COS04 NUV HV RAMP UP Visit 2 of 3 is at 152/0315 (tonight at
11:15 EDT)
o OR to clear Event flag 3 in works, before next step up
tonight.
• Visit 3 is tomorrow, just after noon.

Engineering
• Status
o Nominal
• Forward Plan
o Update to ASIC FSW values needed based on analysis of
O-scope data
 Plan for update to be presented at SMOV morning
meeting ~Tuesday
o Oscilloscope mode optimization iteration #2 scheduled
154/00:15 UTC
o Second End BEA check scheduled 156/06:32 UTC
Science (LSmith and DGolimowski)
• 11372 ACS/SBC UV Contamination check results. (See attached ppt
SBC_first UV contam check 31May09, LSmith)
Criterion for safe exit; at least 4 filters are within 5% of preSM4 data obtained May 2.
o Results for weighted average difference in magnitude (70
stars in NCG 6681) between May 2 and May 30 data.
o Safe BEA exit for HST Optics conditions have been met.
o This observation was ACSSBC “First Light.”
WFC Optimization Campaign (OC) (See attached ppt
ACSSMOV20090531 from DGolimowski)
o CTE (charge transfer efficiency) degradation is consistent (or
slightly better) than estimate. EPER tests show CTE close
to, but just under ‘Problematic” threshold.
o May drive us to request lower CCD temperature. There is
no downside to do so, but we may not be able to lower it
more depending on the aft-shroud temp.
o Would like to do before (internal) science cals start.

• Status
o @ 151/11:07:40 OMBT1 (MEB temperature) went over limit
of 30.0 briefly (hit 30.28) before returning inbounds at 29.85.
 Again at 11:15:40. HSTAR 11855.
 SMO-1060 says NSSC1 will safe STIS at 34.7, and
that the STIS FSW does not monitor this
temperature.
 MEB1 isn’t ever going to be used again anyway,
why would we Safe STIS because of it?
 Currently at 5 degrees, (8 counts) from the safing
limits.
• Forward Plan
o Mechanism Functional Test begins 152/01:20 UTC
o 1st FUV MAMA HV turn-on 153/11:35 UTC

 From May 30 (8am) to May 31 (8am), Pacor-A received one event with fasttrack observations. The data was processed and delivered to OPUS without
any problems.
o
