Dear Parishioners,
During the time I have been Pastor, St. Ignatius has had an informal relationship with St. Mary of the Angels Parish
in Roxbury. The reason for this has been the Jesuit pastoral presence at SMA for more than ten years. The last two
Pastors were Jesuits, and they have enlisted the help of other Jesuits, many of whom are Spanish speaking, in order
to meet the needs of the Latino community. With the departure of their Pastor, Dave Gill, S.J., the leadership of
SMA has been exploring ways of continuing the Jesuit presence in the parish. In a conversation I had with our own
Parish Pastoral Council, I raised the possibility of a pastoral partnership with SMA, given the fact that both of our
parishes share an Ignatian charism. The response from our PPC was positive, and I began exploring this plan with
the Archdiocese. The outcome of these discussions is that I have been appointed Administrator of St Mary of the
Angels for the coming year. The position will begin on September 1st
and I am looking forward to seeing how
each of these communities can continue to grow and share our common faith and Ignatian charism. At this point, I
am not sure of the practical implications of caring for two parishes, but I am confident that with the generosity of
our parish community and the many Jesuits who care about SMA, this will be a fruitful pastoral endeavor. Please
keep me and both of our parishes in your prayers. I promise I will keep you informed as to how this exciting
pastoral adventure is working.
In Christ,
Fr. Bob

OUTREACH MINISTRIES
SHATTUCK SUMMER COOK-OUT: This summer’s cookout is set for Saturday, July
19th. Sign-up materials, for donations and kitchen prep and serving help, are on the
Outreach table! July 12th/13th is the last weekend to sign up!
COR UNUM MEAL CENTER, LAWRENCE:
The next serving
date is Saturday, August 23rd. If you’d like to serve that evening,
you may sign up at the Outreach table in the gathering space. To
learn more about Cor Unum, check out the website:
www.corunummealcenter.org.
COMING: Saturday, August 2nd – a Habitat Build Day at the West
Newton site. If you’ve signed on as a Habitat volunteer, you’ll be
getting the specifics about the Build by email. For those who would like
to help out “behind the scene” by supporting our Builders in underwriting the cost of
materials used, you may deposit your donation in the paint can at the display on the
Outreach table or mail it to St. Ignatius, marking it Habitat. In the past, we’ve had
businesses/firms support our Builders; perhaps your company/firm/place of employment
would like to do so? Contact Sr. Diane if this is of interest to you.
ALSO COMING:
Our annual Back-to-School Items Drive to help out parents at Julie’s Family
Learning Program in South Boston and Mother Caroline Academy in
Dorchester. In addition, we’ll collect cash donations to send to St. Anne’s
School in Kingston, Jamaica. The Drive will be August 23rd/24th. Shop
early and often! But please bring your items the weekend of the Drive – we
have very little space to store items. Watch upcoming bulletins for a list of
wanted items.
HELPING OUT THOSE IN NEED: With utility, food and fuel costs rising,
we expect to see an increase in the number of persons who come to us
seeking help to provide food for their family. You can be of help by
donating gift cards from Stop & Shop or Shaw’s/Star. $10 gift cards are
best. You may bring your donation to the Rectory or drop it in the
collection basket on the weekend. Thank you!
HELP IS NEEDED with breakfast and/or lunch service at St. Francis House on
weekends during the summer. If this would work for you, make contact at
lcampbell@stfrancishouse.org or call 617.654.1212.
FAITH FORMATION NEWS
REGISTRATION FOR FAITH FORMATION FOR 2008-2009
Registration for the 2008 – 2009 academic year has begun. While registration will continue through the
beginning of September, the earlier you register, the easier it is for us to plan for the fall.
This year, when you register, if you have a child who will be receiving a sacrament in 2008-2009, we
would ask that you fill out a separate sacramental registration form when you fill out your registration
form for the program. We have had some trouble with our numbers this year for sacramental
preparation, and we are hopeful that this step will help us to keep a better record of who is in our
community and intends to prepare for receiving a sacrament in 2009.
In order to keep our information as accurate as possible and to plan for the upcoming year, we will have
the following available:




Registration Form for 2008 – 2009 Faith Formation Program

Sacramental Registration forms (First Reconciliation/First Eucharist OR Confirmation)
Sign up sheets for the following: Volunteering as a catechist
Volunteering for liturgical ministries (Eucharistic Ministering, Liturgical Coordinating, Eucharistic bread
baking).
