Textbook: Ronald J. Harshbarger and James J. Reynolds, Mathematical Applications
for the Management, Life, and Social Sciences, Special Eighth Edition for the University
of Utah (Volume II). ISBN-13: 978-0-547-06415-4, ISBN-10: 0-547-06415-2.
Prerequisites: ”C” or better in (Math 1050 OR Math 1090) OR Accuplacer test score
of 80 or better.
Exams: There will be two midterms as well as a final exam. Tentative dates for the
midterms: Test 1 - Sept 22, probable course material is chapter 9. Test 2 - Nov 3
(on chapters 10 and 11). All exams are closed book and notes. I will allow scientific
calculators (but not graphing caculators) on the exams.
Final Exam: December 13, 6:00 - 8:00 pm, in the regular classroom. The exam will
cover the entire course.
Homework: Homework will be assigned every week and collected on Tuesdays, and
some portion of the problems will be graded. Late homework will not be accepted. You
are encouraged to discuss homework problems with friends and make study groups, but
each homework should be written individually. (Copying someone else’s work will be
punished).
Grading:
The homework will count for 20% of the grade, two midterms will be 25%
each, and the final exam will make up the remaining 30% of the grade.
Course Outline and Tentative Schedule: The course will discuss differentiation,
maximization and minimization of functions, marginal analysis and the optimization of
constrained functions, integration and applications.

Derivatives: Aug 23 - Sept 13.
Part II Chapters 10-11 Applications: Sept 20 - Oct 25.
Part III Chapters 12-13 Integrals: Oct 27 - Nov 22.
Part IV Chapter 14 Functions of several variables: Nov 29 - Dec 8.
Holidays Labor Day : September 5
Fall break: October 10-15
Thanksgiving break: November 24-25
