Please join us in the Upper Church for this forty-five minute escape from your busy life and enter into the peace of the season. WE WAIT IN JOYFUL HOPE… As Interior Designers, we are often asked to explain the visions, plans or reasons for the decisions that we make to enhance or change someone’s living or workspace. Over the five years that I have served in this parish as the creative designer for decorating our beautiful church, I am often asked to share my vision: why I chose what I did to enhance our worship. I am blessed with a wonderful team who helps me develop and execute that vision. I shared with them, and wanted to share with you, some thoughts on that vision. This year, for the Advent Season, I was asked to reflect, in the environment of our church, what it means to “wait in joyful hope”. It should come as no surprise to the faithful that this year’s Advent Season offers a new set of questions for us to ponder. Most importantly, we are invited to look deeper into the symbols that surround us in our worship spaces. As you look around, you will see that we have used color, fabric, art and light to help us as we ponder these questions. When you think of ‘joyful hope’, do you not think of the celebration that is to come, the birth of our Lord? And as you wait, do you not think of the path to that great day? In many cultures, celebration or “JOY” is met with dancing, singing and colorful decorations, which remind and encourage us to expect and prepare, as the Hebrew people experienced waiting for the coming of the Messiah. The multicolor ribbon reminds of us of streamers and banners, which are used to express our joy during those celebrations. Unlike the red-purple of Lent, the purple color of the Advent Season should favor a shade of blue that offers a vision of winter and one the reflects the royalty of Jesus as Messiah and King… Angels also offer us a meditative reminder of waiting. Several times throughout the Scriptures heard during the Advent Season, we hear of angels appearing to Mary, Joseph and even the shepherds: bringing messages of hope and encouragement. We can also use warmth and hope as we, too, prepare for the coming of the Christ Child . . . as we wait in joyful hope… The Warmest of Advent Wishes, Eric M. Haydel 1.
