LABORATORY EYE PROTECTION POLICY
1. Faculty and staff are required to wear eye protection AT ALL TIMES in instructional
laboratories. OSHA/ANSI certified eye protection (ex. goggles, safety glasses with splash
shields, face shields) is mandatory.
2. Students in all instructional laboratories are required to wear goggles that are splash proof
and indirectly vented. The Department will provide, at no cost to the student, an anti-fog
spray to be used if necessary.
3. Wearing contact lenses is permitted in accordance with the ACS Subcommittee on
Chemical Health and Safety provided the wearer also wears splash-proof and indirectly
vented goggles.
4. In research laboratories OSHA/ANSI certified (see above) eye protection is strongly
recommended. The Principle Investigator is responsible for setting and enforcing the
appropriate level of PPE (personal protection equipment).
5. The above policy is in accordance with the University of South Alabama Chemical
Hygiene Plan, “PPE”, page 6, 1996, and USA Hazard Communication Manual, August
2001.
6. Any exception to the policies stated above will be addressed on an individual basis by the
Departmental Safety Committee and, if appropriate, the USA Safety Committee.
7. This policy is effective and fully enforceable as of January 01, 2002.
