Broadcast Internship
Background:
WJOX-FM is a sports talk format radio station based in Birmingham, Alabama. WJOX simulcasts on
94.5-FM and has similar programming on 100.5-FM and 690-AM. Cumulus Media Group, the parent
company, has several other stations in Birmingham including WUHT Hot 107.7, WZRR 99.5 The Vibe,
and WAPI NewsTalk 1070.
Description:
The purpose of the internship is to give the student a view into the world of a radio station, specifically a
sports talk station. After interning with WJOX, the student will have an understanding of station
programming, show preparation and execution, technical aspects such as recording, mixing and editing,
as well as an introduction to the business side of radio.
Responsibilities:




Assisting talent and staff with production of on-air programming
o Recording talent programming for future use
o Setting up studio for on-air broadcasts
o Ensuring advertisements and endorsements are ready for broadcast
Maintaining the digital and internet based aspect of the show
o Podcasting interviews
o Updating station websites
Interacting and socializing with listeners through digital means
Screening calls during on-air broadcasts
