Minutes Membership Meeting
May 16, 2014
Attendees: Swhanta Taylor, Jeanette Spiegelburg, Teresa Borchardt, Lisa Neumann, Holly McFaul, Casey Lalonde, Olga
Websted, Edward Esparza, Toni Terry, Kay Schlemmer, Laurie Cornelius, Donna Simon, Kathy Soldat
Casey Lalonde called the meeting to order and reviewed the agenda. Edward E. spoke about his work at the SBCTC and has
developed a deeper understanding of the passion and professionalism of the leaders in the WCCCC group. Edward observed
that the conference is a time of healing and mentoring between directors. The professional development was very appropriate
and effective, and being involved has “recharged his batteries. On behalf of the SBCTC, I want to thank you for your work
supporting students and their success.” The SBCTC recognized that childcare has been disenfranchised. Ed hopes to engage
Joe Holliday, the new Director for Student Services in bringing our priorities to the forefront. In reflecting on our work we
would benefit from indentifying a few specific messages where SBCTC could offer support. Ed suggested our group provide a
workshop on our services to the student government conference “Achieving the Dream.” Childcare should be part of the
conversation when wrap around services for low-income students are discussed along with BFET and Opportunity Grants. He
wondered if student parents’ needs are marginalized because they are not able to access child care and attend state wide
student government conferences. Edward asked the group if students able to attend school through the Dream Act were
seeking childcare. He also said that we could have our minutes posted to the SBCTC WCCCC webpage. Edward recognized that
the list serve has been very helpful to discuss best practices and current news or issues. He encouraged us to let studentparents know that they can create a student club to support their interests, issues and projects.
Casey invited us to define the message that Edward can help us share with SBCTC. Laurie, Holly and Casey have offered to
continue to the conversation to create meaningful conversations around the ways we support student services. Even with the
various structures of centers. They will define how Ed Esparza can help us.
Holly asked was administrative code for SBCTC allows colleges to create a budget line to support the work of childcare centers
on campuses. We need to be recognized and planned for to be sustainable. Holly also brought up her concern that Everett had
lost their CCAMPIS grant and needing to enroll more community families paying at a higher rate to provide adequate funding.
Laurie Cornelius said that her percentage of full paying community members is 30% and 70% are students and those on state
subsidy. Jeanette said that the Centralia college is not in a location where middle and high income families are living to
provide an economic basis. Each campus is unique in evaluating their community to determine where self-sustaining tuition
can be earned.
Casey shared their centers’ “Bubble Blowing” event during the month of the Young Child and the t-shirts that were designed
and sold as a fund raiser to purchase some outdoor enhancements.
A discussion was held about the value of connection the children to nature and the importance of environmental
custodianship.
Jeanette shared about Centralia’s Veterans program and they are planning on starting a Special Education BA program in
2015.
The “non-annual” report was discussed and a plan to produce the report using the same framework was discussed. I was
suggested that there be a greater emphasis on retention data. Please look at the data and be prepared to update our college’s
information. Laurie suggested that individual, unique projects and college or community connections be highlighted.
The group reviewed the year’s meetings and trainings and felt it was very positive. The conference training was relevant as a
follow up to last year’s reflective supervision workshops.
The conference for 2015 is booked for May 13, 14 and 15 at Menucha. Mary Lou Melly at Pennisula has offered to host the fall
meeting on October 17, 2014. The winter meeting is suggested for Everett on January 23rd, 2015, and the spring meeting will
be scheduled for Shoreline on March 13, 2015.
A theme for our work next year could be outreach to campus child care in north, central and eastern Washington; connect with
the state board and the report. Kathy will send out the current membership and non-member community colleges and 4-year
institutions not in our membership.
Casey has requested that the process for adding and terminating members to the list serve be outlined for the new officers.
